Viktoras Ašmenskas

Viktoras Ašmenskas (born February 19, 1912 in Viliūšiai , Wolost Jankai , Šakiai district , now Kazlų Rūda municipality ; † February 25, 2016 ) was a Lithuanian engineer, glider pilot and pilot as well as resistance fighter against the Soviet occupation.

Life

In 1924 Ašmenskas graduated from the Jankai elementary school near Kazlų Rūda . He then attended the "Žiburio" high school in Šakiai and from 1925 to 1927 the Jesuit high school in Kaunas and from 1929 to 1934 the Kaunas technical college . From 1932 to 1939 he worked as a journalist for the Lithuanian military magazines ( Karys , Trimitas and Lietuvos sparnai ). In 1934 Ašmenskas graduated from the gliding school in Nida on the Curonian Spit and received an international pilot's license. From 1936 to 1937 he studied at the Technical Faculty of the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas . In 1939 Ašmenskas flew 750 km (the route Tallinn - Riga - Joniškis - Palanga - Kaunas) in the first air sports competition in the Baltic States and received a prize for it.

From 1941 he took part in the activities of the Lithuanian Activist Front and in June 1941 in the uprising against the Soviet occupying power. He then studied again and graduated from the University of Kaunas with technical studies in 1942. From 1944 to 1946 he worked as a chief engineer in the capital construction department of the People's Commissariat of the Forest Industry . On March 19, 1946, Ašmenskas was arrested in Vilnius , tortured and held in Lukiškės Prison , then in Klaipėda and, from 1948, in labor camps in Mordovia . In 1955 he was deported to the Krasnoyarsk Territory .

In 1957 Ašmenskas returned to Vilnius. From 1963 he worked in the reinforced concrete construction plant, from 1964 to 1966 as chief engineer and from 1966 as its deputy. From 1977 to 1987 he worked at the sports aviation plant in Prienai .

From 1969 Ašmenskas was an official of the Lithuanian Air Sports Association. From 1972 to 1976 he headed the sports parachuting committee . From 1976 to 1990 he was the responsible secretary and from 1990 to 1992 general secretary of the association.

In 1997 Ašmenskas was promoted to Dimission - Lieutenant of the Lithuanian Armed Forces .
