The Children's Palliative Center at the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic Datteln , University of Witten / Herdecke is a special facility for the comprehensive care of children, adolescents and young adults with life-threatening illnesses. It houses the first pediatric palliative ward in Germany called "Lichtblicke".

History and Development

Since 1999, children with life-threatening illnesses have been cared for by a specialized team at the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic in Datteln - initially on a voluntary basis. In 2005, the clinic was awarded the first palliative beds in the hospital plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2006 Boris Zernikow and his team founded the Vodafone Foundation Institute for Pediatric Pain Therapy and Pediatric Palliative Medicine (VIKP) (2006–2012). The establishment and expansion of the institute was made possible by the long-term financial support of the Vodafone Foundation Germany .

Together with the Center for Palliative Medicine of the Malteser Hospital Bonn and the Clinic for Pediatrics of the University Hospital Bonn , the VIKP carried out the first national model project implemented by the North Rhine-Westphalia State Initiative of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs (MAGS) from 2007 to 2009 for nationwide outpatient palliative care for children and adolescents.

The VIKP became the Children's Palliative Center in 2010 and the German Children's Pain Center in 2012 . In order to further strengthen the academic activities in the field of pediatric pain therapy and pediatric palliative medicine and to act as a contact for politics and science, the Chair for Pediatric Pain Therapy and Pediatric Palliative Medicine was established at the University of Witten / Herdecke in 2008 with the support of the Vodafone Foundation Germany.

Structure and structure

Children, adolescents and young adults with a life-threatening illness receive medical, nursing and psychosocial care in the Datteln Children's Palliative Center, both on an outpatient basis through specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV) and on an inpatient basis. The "Lichtblicke station" is a specialist station for pediatric palliative medicine , where up to eight patients can be admitted together with their parents and siblings. The dynamic development of pediatric palliative and pain medicine leads to an immense need for further and advanced training for all professional groups involved. In order to do justice to this, the Children's Palliative Center offers qualified seminars and workshops for employees in the fields of nursing, medicine and psychosocial care.

Research and Teaching

In 2008 Boris Zernikow was appointed to the chair for pediatric pain therapy and pediatric palliative medicine at the University of Witten / Herdecke. This was the first chair for child palliative care in Europe. He was followed by the True Colors Trust Chair in Child Palliative Care at the Institute of Child Health at University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital, which Myra Bluebond-Langner has held since 2010.

In pediatric palliative care, the Chair for Pediatric Pain Therapy and Pediatric Palliative Medicine - Witten / Herdecke University focuses on the following research areas:

  • Sleep disorders, daytime restlessness, pain and dyspnea in children with life-threatening and life-limiting diseases
  • Recording of symptoms and quality of life in the end of life of children and adolescents with oncological diseases
  • Supply of pediatric palliative patients with multi-resistant germs
  • Voluntary work in palliative care
  • Evaluation of inpatient palliative medicine

In addition to various courses and events, students have the opportunity to do their doctorate at the Chair of Pediatric Pain Therapy and Pediatric Palliative Medicine.

financing

The construction of the children's palliative center was realized exclusively through third-party funding. The RTL Foundation - We Help Children , the NRW Welfare Foundation and the German Cancer Aid played a special role . The Freundeskreis Kinderpalliativzentrum Datteln eV was founded in 2010 to finance the running costs that are not borne by the health insurances - this includes above all the financing of the employees of the psychosocial team and additional care centers. The share of third-party funds in the total annual costs is around 30%.
