The Vestische Kinder- und Jugendklinik Datteln , University of Witten / Herdecke is a national hospital and university clinic with a wide range of treatment areas for children and adolescents of all ages in Datteln .

history

Established after the Second World War

After the end of the Second World War , the British occupying forces confiscated the mine and placed it under the Northern German Coal Control . The newly appointed mine director, Hans-Friedrich Steiner, renounced the villa his predecessor had offered him and suggested that it be made available for a social purpose. Colonel Oliver, the British officer in charge at the time and himself a miner, gave his consent. The Steiner couple and two nuns from the Order of Divine Providence organized the renovation under the difficult circumstances of the post-war period. Before that, the two sisters, Sr. Bernfrieda and Sr. Irmigard, worked in the children's hospital in Recklinghausen. This was destroyed by bombs during the war. As a thank you to Colonel Oliver, this facility was named Oliverhaus , the inauguration of which was celebrated on May 5, 1946. It was originally intended for the children of the employees of the Emscher-Lippe colliery , but it was also open to other children.

Initially the house housed a kitchen, a milk kitchen , a laboratory and several hospital rooms with twelve beds.

Financially, the Oliverhaus was organized by the mine, represented by Hans-Friedrich Steiner. The administration of the economic service and the care was incumbent on the superior.

In the beginning there was no head doctor, only an assistant doctor, Toschke, could be hired. In the transition period, a resident doctor from Recklinghausen took over the treatment of the children. In August 1946 Werner Döhrmann became chief physician at the Oliverhaus. He held this position until 1960.

From the Oliverhaus to the Vestische Children's Clinic

In 1956 the colliery donated the former mining owner's villa, the Oliverhaus, to the sisters of the Order of Divine Providence. Since the capacity, meanwhile 40 patients could be admitted, was not sufficient, it was decided to build a new building. Appropriate state funds were approved in the summer of 1958 and the groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 7 of the same year. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated in the autumn of the following year . The building was occupied at the end of 1960. On July 5, 1961, the Vestische Children's Clinic was inaugurated . The construction costs amounted to five million marks. With the new building, a perinatal center and an EEG laboratory have now also moved in . If they already had over 200 beds, the number grew to 280 in the 1960s. Nevertheless, there was a lack of space, so that sometimes two patients lay in one bed and drawers and bathtubs have been converted into baby beds.

In the meantime, Heinrich Rodeck became the clinic's chief physician. He also introduced the Dattelner model , which provides a combination of outpatient and inpatient care. In 1985 he was replaced as Medical Director by Werner Andler. Michael Paulussen has been the Medical Director of the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic since July 2010.

Differentiation and milestones

The sleep laboratory with four places was inaugurated in autumn 1988. The most important task in the early years was to examine children and adolescents with regard to the risk of sudden child death. Today, the focus is on clarifying a wide range of sleep disorders, including in children with multiple disabilities.

In January 1991 the new perinatal center was opened, which in 1993 moved to the rooms of the St. Vincenz Hospital in order to be able to offer ten instead of six ventilation places. This new “real” perinatal center was inaugurated in the spring of 1994. Today the new and premature infant intensive care unit in the Datteln Perinatal Center has 20 beds, 12 of which are for invasive ventilation. The Perinatal Center Datteln looks after around 2,000 births each year, around 85 of which are from children weighing less than 1,500 grams.

On September 18, 1991, the Institute for Pedaudiology and Phoniatrics was inaugurated in the Children's Clinic. The necessity of connecting such an institute to a children's clinic is that hearing and speech disorders in children are often not an isolated disability, but rather a global developmental disorder.

In 2002 Boris Zernikow founded the Vodafone Foundation Institute for Pediatric Pain Therapy and Pediatric Palliative Medicine (VIKP) with the support of the Vodafone Foundation Germany . The Datteln Children's Palliative Center emerged from the VIKP in 2010 and the German Children's Pain Center in 2012 .

In 2011 the medical child protection clinic started its work. Today the department cares for around 1,000 children a year who are presented with suspicion of neglect, mistreatment or abuse. The medical child protection clinic, together with the forensic medicine department of the University of Cologne, forms the competence center for child protection in the health care system in NRW.
