Career

After doing community service at the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic in Datteln, Zernikow studied human medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1986 to 1993 . He completed his practical year at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen and the Harvard Medical School , Boston. For the period 1987 to 1993 he received a grant from the Cusanuswerk .

After studying medicine, Zernikow was trained as a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine with a focus on pediatric oncology and additional qualifications in special pain therapy and palliative medicine at the university hospitals in Bonn, Datteln and Münster . In 2004 he completed his habilitation on pain therapy in oncological pediatrics (STOP) - results of a nationwide quality management program .

Together with a multi-professional team, Zernikow set up the Vodafone Foundation Institute for Pediatric Pain Therapy and Pediatric Palliative Medicine (VIKP) in Datteln at the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic in 2002 . The German Children's Pain Center and the Children's Palliative Center Datteln have now emerged from this institute . In 2008 Zernikow was appointed to Europe's first chair for pediatric pain therapy and pediatric palliative care from the University of Witten / Herdecke . He is the liaison professor of the Cusanuswerk.

Act

In addition to on-site patient care, Zernikow's work also aims to structurally improve the care of children and adolescents with chronic pain and life-limiting diseases. Together with his team, he trains specialists in child palliative care and pain medicine and organizes regular congresses ( Dattelner Children 's Pain Days ). He conducts patient-oriented research that contributes to the identification of gaps in care and the broad implementation of developed approaches.

Above all, Zernikow associates his work with a social mission. Through countless publications, interviews, discussions and lectures, he brought a group of patients into the public eye that had previously been poorly cared for and neglected: children and adolescents with chronic pain and life-limiting diseases. Zernikow thus creates points of contact for cooperation and opportunities for further development between associations, foundations and politics. Last but not least, the medical professional takes a position in social debates as a specialist.

Patient care

Zernikow is the chief physician of the German Children's Pain Center and the Children's Palliative Center in Datteln at the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic. The German Children's Pain Center is one of the largest facilities for the treatment and research of chronic pain in children and adolescents. A multimodal therapy program for the treatment of chronic pain was developed here, which is now also used in other centers. This treatment program is characterized above all by its short but highly intensive and long-term successful treatment.

In June 2010, the world's first children's palliative center was opened at the Vestische Children's and Youth Clinic in Datteln under the medical direction of Zernikow. Pediatric palliative care has set itself the task of alleviating the painful symptoms of the disease and, together with the entire family, to ensure the highest possible quality of life. For several years Zernikow has been listed as an expert in the Focus doctor list.
