The German Society for Palliative Medicine (DGP) was founded in Cologne in 1994 . The professional association stands for the interdisciplinary and multi- professional networking of all those active in palliative medicine: Almost 60 percent of the 6,000 DGP members come from medicine, almost 30 percent from nursing and a total of over ten percent from other professional groups active in palliative care.

It is the concern of the multi-professional society to promote the further development of palliative medicine in an interdisciplinary manner and across professional groups at all levels.

President is Lukas Radbruch; In June 2014 he succeeded Friedemann Nauck (President of the DGP from 2010 to 2014) in this honorary position .

In cooperation with the German Hospice and Palliative Association and the German Medical Association , the charter for the care of critically ill and dying people in Germany was created , which was approved by over 50 institutions on August 17, 2010 and has since been signed by a total of more than 13,000 people and institutions. The five guiding principles of the charter formulate tasks, goals and the need for action in order to improve the care of seriously ill and dying people in Germany. The focus is always on the person affected.

Recognition and advancement award for outpatient palliative care

To recognize the special commitment and to promote initiatives and projects in the context of outpatient palliative care, the German Society for Palliative Medicine has been awarding the "Recognition and Promotion Prize for Outpatient Palliative Care" since 2008. The prize is donated by a pharmaceutical company. The “Recognition and Promotion Prize for Outpatient Palliative Care” can be awarded to people and institutions who have made a special contribution to the development of palliative medicine in the outpatient sector.
