Dave Mirra (2010)

David Michael "Dave" Mirra (born April 4, 1974 in Chittenango , New York ; † February 4, 2016 in Greenville , North Carolina ) was an American extreme athlete who was active in BMX and rallycross races.

life and career

Mirra was born in New York State in 1974. He graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona .

Mirra's brother Tim moved to Greenville, North Carolina to study there in the 1990s. David soon followed him. BMX rider Ryan Nyquist moved in with Tim. Mirra and Nyquist then started building ramps together. There are now over 20 professional BMX riders living in Greenville, which is now called "Protown" within the scene.

Mirra began his professional career in 1992 and first won a medal at the 1995 X-Games. From there on, except in 2006, he won at least one medal every year. He won a total of 24 medals, 14 of which were gold. From 2011 he put his sporting focus on participating in rallycross races, from 2014 he also took part in Ironman and triathlon competitions.

He held - until he was replaced by Bob Burnquist in 2013 - the record for most medals won at the X Games . He owned his own company and won the Race Across America in 2014 in a team of four men under 50.

He had two daughters with his wife, Lauren.

On February 4, 2016, Mirra was found dead in a pickup truck after visiting friends in another district of Greenville. Since he died as a result of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound , the police assume a suicide .
