Paul Lange (canoeist)

Paul Lange (born February 6, 1931 in Oberhausen ; † March 15, 2016 there ) was a German canoeist . He became Olympic champion in Rome in 1960 .

Life

The trained bricklayer launched for Turnerschaft Sterkrade 1869 in canoe racing . In 1957, Lange was part of the (West) German 4 × 500 meter relay in a single kayak and won silver at the European Championships in Ghent . In 1958 he became (West) German champion in single kayak on the 500-meter course. At the 1958 World Championships , he won gold with Meinrad Miltenberger , Fritz Briel and Helmut Herz in the relay and with Meinrad Miltenberger bronze in a two-man kayak . In 1959, Lange was European champion with the relay.

In 1960, Lange won his second (West) German championship in a single kayak over 500 meters. For the 1960 Olympic Games on Lake Albano , two canoeists from Germany, Friedhelm Wentzke and Paul Lange, and two canoeists from the GDR, Günter Perleberg and Dieter Krause , were registered for the relay . The relay won gold, making it the most successful all-German team. In 1961, Lange was again European champion with the relay.

Lange is the only Olympic champion from Oberhausen so far.
