Dieter Krause (born January 18, 1936 in Brandenburg an der Havel ; † August 10, 2020 in Bad Saarow ) was a German canoeist and sports official . He became Olympic champion in Rome in 1960 .

Career

Krause was the GDR youth champion in 1953 and 1954 . When he started his studies at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig, he joined the DHfK sports club .

Between 1955 and 1965 he won a total of 23 GDR championship titles. In 1958 he was the first canoeist from the GDR to win a world championship medal with a bronze over 500 meters. In 1959, 1961 and 1963 he was European champion in a four-kayak.

At the 1960 Summer Olympics on Lake Albano , a single 4-by-500-meter relay was held in a single kayak (which was replaced by the four-person kayak from 1964 ). For this season, Friedhelm Wentzke and Paul Lange, two canoeists from the Federal Republic and Günter Perleberg and Krause, two canoeists from the GDR were registered. The relay won gold, making it the most successful all-German team. Together with Wolfgang Lange , Krause also took eighth place in a two-person kayak over 500 meters.

After his competitive career, the qualified sports teacher worked as a trainer and sports official for the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation . He was the last general secretary of the GDR cycling association.

State Security staff

Krause worked as an unofficial employee with the code name "Reiner Lesser" for the State Security of the GDR . On the instructions of the Stasi, he was invited to the apartment of a sports comrade in order to "secure" him for a certain period of time.
