Fritz Briel

Fritz Briel (born October 24, 1934 in Düsseldorf ; † March 15, 2017 there ) was a German canoeist . He took part in the 1956 Olympics and won a silver medal.

Career

The canoeist from Rheintreue Düsseldorf won his first German championship title in the adult class in 1954. The 1955 Western European champion over 10,000 meters qualified for the all-German team for the Olympic Games in 1956 . In Melbourne he competed with Theo Kleine in a two-man kayak over 10,000 meters, three seconds behind the Hungarians János Urányi and László Fábián , Kleine and Briel won the silver medal.

For this, he and his partner Theo Kleine received the Silver Laurel Leaf on January 21, 1957 .

At the European Championships in Ghent in 1957, Briel won four medals, he won over 10,000 meters in a single kayak and together with his club colleague Heinz Ackers in a two-person kayak over 1000 meters. There was also a silver medal in a single kayak over 1000 meters behind Valentin Naumow from the Soviet Union and a bronze medal in a four-person kayak over 1000 meters.

In 1958 at the World Championships in Prague he won over 1000 meters in a single kayak. He won a second world championship title in the 4 x 500 meter relay together with Paul Lange , Helmut Herz and Meinrad Miltenberger . At the end of 1959, Fritz Briel fell seriously ill and therefore missed the Olympic qualification in 1960.

After starting again at the German championships in 1960, he celebrated his international comeback at the 1961 European championships in Poznan. He won the title over 10,000 meters in the single and in the 4 x 500 meter relay together with Paul Lange, Heinz Büker and Friedhelm Wentzke . On his special route in a single kayak over 10,000 meters, Briel won both the world title and the European title in Jajce in 1963. Fritz Briel won his last major international medal in 1966 at the World Championships in East Berlin; behind the Hungarians Mihály Hesz and Wladimir Zemljakow from the Soviet Union, Briel won bronze again.

The trained plumber ran a petrol station in Hilden from 1960 to 1970 , went into business for himself as a state-certified masseur in 1970 and ran the Briel spa in Düsseldorf-Eller until his retirement . He was a Protestant, married to Barbara Briel and had a daughter. Most recently he lived in the Urdenbach district of Düsseldorf .
