Ramy Mohamed Ashour ( Arabic رامي عاشور, DMG Rāmī ʿĀšūr ; * September 30, 1987 in Cairo ) is a former Egyptian squash player . He repeatedly led the world rankings and won in 2008, 2012 and 2014 World Cup .

Career

Ashour has already won numerous important titles in the juniors. Between 1999 and 2001, he won the title at the British Open several times in the U13 and U15 age groups . In 2004, after beating Yasir Butt in the final, he became the youngest junior world champion in history. In the team competition that followed, he lost to the Egyptian national team 1: 2 to Pakistan , with Ashour winning all of his games. In the same year he began his professional career and took part in a tournament of the PSA World Tour in Athens for the first time , which he immediately won. In 2005 he moved back to the final of the Athens tournament, this time losing to his brother Hisham Mohd Ashour in four sets. After only two tournaments he was already placed in the top 100 in the world rankings, he finished the season in 62nd place. At the World Championship for professional players, he qualified for the main field in his first participation at the end of 2005, in the first round of which he was in the third Had to give up the set against Grégory Gaultier due to injury. 2006 got off to a successful start for Ashour when he won the U19 field at the British Open in early January. In the same month he moved into the final of the Dayton Open , but had to admit defeat there to John White . In June 2006 he moved up to 20th place in the world rankings. A month later he became the first player to defend his junior world championship title in New Zealand with a 3-0 win over Omar Mosaad . In the team competition, Egypt retained the upper hand against Pakistan 2-1 this time. Again Ashour remained without defeat. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season Ashour reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup against Grégory Gaultier, which he lost 3-0. The Hong Kong Open went far better, where he moved into the final unsettled and beat number three and two in the world rankings with Thierry Lincou and David Palmer . In the final he was defeated by the top seeded Amr Shabana in four sets. In the world rankings he climbed to ninth place and thus for the first time into the top ten. At the subsequent US Open and the Pakistan Open , he was eliminated in the semifinals.

In 2008 Ashour also won the men's world championship in Manchester with a 3-1 win over Karim Darwish . Only Jansher Khan previously managed to win this title in both the junior and men's division . Another world title followed in 2009 with the Egyptian national team , before Ashour achieved his greatest goal to date in January 2010: the top position in the world rankings. Ashour was in charge from January to December 2010, only interrupted by a brief period in the summer months of June, July and August. In 2011 he defended the world title with Egypt . The 2012 season went almost perfectly for Ashour: With only seven tournament appearances, he moved into all finals and won five of the seven finals. Only at the North American Open and the British Open he lost to James Willstrop and Nick Matthew . The titles won in 2012 include the World Cup , which Ramy Ashour won again for the first time since 2008. He lost only two games in the entire season. In his career, Ashour won a total of 40 titles on the PSA World Tour . In April 2013 he reached 1872 points, the highest point average in the world rankings to date. All tournaments played by him within the last twelve months were included in his rating, a total of nine. He won eight of them and was in the final one more time. Seven of these eight titles were in the PSA World Series category . In April 2016, Mohamed Elshorbagy exceeded the record. On November 21, 2014, after a thigh injury, he played the first tournament in six months with the World Cup . He reached his fourth final at a world championship, which he won against Mohamed Elshorbagy in five sets. He then underwent meniscus surgery and was absent until April 2015. At his first tournament after the injury break, the World Series El Gouna International , he defended his title from the previous year with a final win over Mohamed Elshorbagy. In 2017 he was in the Egyptian squad at the World Cup and won his third title with it in this competition. On April 22, 2019, he announced his retirement due to ongoing injury problems. He played his last tournament at the British Open in 2018 .

In the 2015/2016 season, Ashour was registered for the first time in the 1st Squash Bundesliga at Sportwerk Hamburg Walddörfer . On June 14, 2016, it came with a win against Simon Rösner from Paderborner SC for the first use as part of the semi-finals of the final of the Bundesliga in Böblingen .

Ramy's older brother, Hisham Mohd Ashour, was also a squash player.
