Amr Shabana , who had to defend his title in front of a home crowd, was top placed this year . In addition to the world rankings, Shabana also led the Super Series Tour . In 2006 he played only four tournaments, of which he won three (the Canadian Classic in January, the Tournament of Champions in February / March and the PSA Masters in April in Bermuda ). The latter two tournaments as well as the Windy City Open , the semifinals of which Shabana reached, were part of the 2006 PSA Super Series .
The main field had a total of 32 places. The top 23 in the world rankings were automatically set. The organizer also had a wild card for 24th place , which went to Egyptian Omar Mosaad : At the U19 World Cup in the same year, he took second place behind his compatriot Ramy Ashour , who qualified directly for the main field . The remaining eight places were played in a qualification in two rounds. A total of 32 players determined eight qualifying places.
After the preliminary round, with a few exceptions, was played in conventional squash facilities in the heart of Cairo , the venue was relocated to the Gizeh Plateau from the quarter-finals . The glass court was there in the open air, directly facing the pyramids of Giza . Spectator stands were set up around the court and could accommodate up to 5000 spectators. The qualification was played over two days (August 30th and 31st) in the Cairo Stadium . The first round and the round of 16 also took place within two days (September 1 and 2, with three games taking place at the pyramids on both days). From the quarter-finals (September 3rd and 4th) all games were played on the plateau in the Glascourt. The semi-finals took place on September 5th, the final on September 6th.
