World Squash Championship 2006

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 28th men's squash world championship took place from September 1st to 6th, 2006. The venue was the Egyptian capital Cairo for the third time . The tournament was part of the PSA World Tour 2006/07 and endowed with $ 152,500.

Amr Shabana , who had to defend his title in front of a home crowd, was top placed this year . In addition to the world rankings, Shabana also led the Super Series Tour . In 2006 he played only four tournaments, of which he won three (the Canadian Classic in January, the Tournament of Champions in February / March and the PSA Masters in April in Bermuda ). The latter two tournaments as well as the Windy City Open , the semifinals of which Shabana reached, were part of the 2006 PSA Super Series .

The main field had a total of 32 places. The top 23 in the world rankings were automatically set. The organizer also had a wild card for 24th place , which went to Egyptian Omar Mosaad : At the U19 World Cup in the same year, he took second place behind his compatriot Ramy Ashour , who qualified directly for the main field . The remaining eight places were played in a qualification in two rounds. A total of 32 players determined eight qualifying places.

Venue and schedule

After the preliminary round, with a few exceptions, was played in conventional squash facilities in the heart of Cairo , the venue was relocated to the Gizeh Plateau from the quarter-finals . The glass court was there in the open air, directly facing the pyramids of Giza . Spectator stands were set up around the court and could accommodate up to 5000 spectators. The qualification was played over two days (August 30th and 31st) in the Cairo Stadium . The first round and the round of 16 also took place within two days (September 1 and 2, with three games taking place at the pyramids on both days). From the quarter-finals (September 3rd and 4th) all games were played on the plateau in the Glascourt. The semi-finals took place on September 5th, the final on September 6th.
