Nicholas "Nick" Matthew , OBE (born July 25, 1980 in Sheffield ) is a former English squash player . He became world champion in 2010 , 2011 and 2013 and led the world rankings for a total of 19 months.

Career

Matthew's career on the professional tour began in 1998. In the same year he became world champion with England's junior national team , and he also reached the semi-finals in junior singles. In 2004 he finally made his first jump into the top ten of the world rankings. With his victory at the British Open in 2006, he became the first Englishman since Jim Dear in 1939 to win the tournament on home soil. He repeated this success in 2009 and 2012. At the 2009 World Games in Taiwan, Matthew won the gold medal by beating long-term rival James Willstrop . Against Willstrop, Matthew played the most World Tour games in his career with 36 clashes. He can show a 27: 9 balance in his favor. With the English national team , Matthew collected numerous titles: In 2005 and 2007 he was team world champion and from 2005 ten times European champion .

At the end of 2009 there was a tough fight for the world rankings: Matthew met Ramy Ashour at the PSA Masters in India and lost it with 1: 3. Less than a month later, the two met again in a final, this time at the Saudi International, a tournament with Super Series status. At this point it was already clear that the winner of the game would take the lead in the world rankings - a position neither of them had reached by then. In a hard-fought game, Ashour finally prevailed again 3-2 after 110 minutes and took the top position. Matthew, since then number two in the world, won the following year 2010 in five tournaments four times the tournament victory, where he was able to defeat Ramy Ashour once. The fourth tournament victory, a 3-1 against Karim Darwish , finally catapulted Matthew to the top of the world rankings for the first time in June 2010. In August 2010 there was another duel against Ashour in the final of the Australian Open. With 3-0, Matthew had the upper hand this time and was able to win his third tournament of the current Super Series season. At the Commonwealth Games 2010 Matthew won the gold medal in both singles and doubles with Adrian Grant . In December 2010, Matthew crowned the year by winning the world championship against his compatriot James Willstrop. At the 2013 World Cup , Nick Matthew won his third team title. With his tournament victory at the subsequent Hong Kong Squash Open , Matthew regained the world rankings for three more months.

Matthew announced in advance of the 2017/18 season that he would end his career when it was over. His first last tournament he played at the British Open , where he was eliminated in the second round against Raphael Kandra . As a result, he narrowly missed qualifying for the World Series Finals , whereupon Matthew ended both the season and his career. Due to the injury-related cancellation of Marwan Elshorbagys shortly before the start of the World Series Finals, Matthew moved up in ninth place in the ranking. In the preliminary round, Matthew won the group before losing to Ali Farag in the semifinals and finally declaring his career over.
