Squash World Team Championship 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 24th World Team Championship for Men ( English 2013 Men's World Team Squash Championships ) was held from 9 to 15 June 2013 in Mulhouse , France instead. The tournament was organized by the French Squash Federation and the World Squash Federation . A total of 31 teams competed.

The defending champion was Egypt , which won the World Cup in 2009 and 2011 . This year, too, Egypt made it to the final. After ungefährderten victories in the group stage against Scotland , Kuwait and Kenya , the team won just as clear in eighth- and quarter-final against Canada and India in the semi-final against Australia until the last item brought the decision when Tarek Momen just in five sets against Ryan Cuskelly prevailed . In the final, Egypt met England , who competed in the tournament with a similarly sovereign manner. This resulted in a new edition of the final of 2011. After clear victories over Canada, Colombia and Namibia in the group stage, the English team remained without a game loss against Scotland and South Africa in the last sixteen and quarter-finals. In the semifinals against hosts France, England finally also prevailed after Nick Matthew beat Grégory Gaultier in a two-hour game and then James Willstrop beat Thierry Lincou 3-1 .

In the final, Daryl Selby brought England into the lead with a smooth success over Tarek Momen, before the individual world champion and world number one Ramy Ashour equalized against Nick Matthew. As in the 2011 World Cup, James Willstrop and Karim Darwish met in the decisive game. In contrast to 2011, James Willstrop was able to prevail this time, so that England could celebrate their fifth world title. In addition to Matthew, Willstrop and Selby, Adrian Grant was also part of the English squad. With the Egyptians, Omar Mosaad sat out in the final.

The German team finished the tournament in fifth place, which was the best result for the team at a world championship. With the round of 16 victory over New Zealand , the team initially set the old record of eighth place, before even surpassing it with two wins over India and South Africa. The Swiss national team finished the tournament in 17th place, one place worse than at the last event, Austria was only 29th.

mode

The participating teams were drawn into eight groups according to their placement, the group size was four teams. Within the groups, the game was played in round robin mode ; the two best-placed teams reached the final round, which was played in the knockout system . At the tournament all places were played out.

All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.

Participating teams

A total of 31 teams from the five continental federations competed: Europe , Asia , America , Africa and Oceania . For Botswana and Poland it was the first participation in a team world championship.
