The defending champion was Pakistan , which was able to reach the final again. In this it was defeated by the United Kingdom team 1: 2, for the British it was the second world title after 1976. Third place went to Australia, ahead of the Federation of Arab Republics . It was the last world championship in which pure amateur teams competed. It was also the last World Cup with an all-British team. From 1981 the teams of England , Scotland and Wales competed independently.
The participating teams competed in two groups. The group played in round robin mode , and the two best-placed teams advanced to the semi-finals. This was carried out in the knockout system . All places were played out.
All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
