The 12th World Team Championship for Men ( English 1989 Men's World Team Squash Championships ) was held from 9 to 16 October 1989 in Singapore instead. A total of 24 teams took part. Italy made its debut at a world championship.
The defending champion was Pakistan , which failed to defend its title for the first time since 1983. In the final, the Pakistani team lost to Australia , which celebrated its fifth title. The Australian team had previously won the World Cup four times in a row from 1967 to 1973. England came third ahead of New Zealand . The team from the Federal Republic of Germany took 10th place. As on its debut in 1987, Switzerland reached 18th place.
The participating teams competed in four groups. These were divided according to the results of the 1987 World Cup , with the twelve best teams being drawn into groups A and B. Only these twelve teams played for the title. The two group best of groups C and D reached the placement games for places 9 to 16, together with group fifth and sixth of groups A and B. Places 17 to 24 were played by the other teams. The group played in round robin mode , and the four best-placed teams in groups A and B advanced to the quarter-finals. This was carried out in the knockout system . All places were played out.
All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
