Ten years after the last title win in 1991, the Australian team was able to win their seventh title in front of their home crowd. This made the team the sole record world champion at the same time, so far they and Pakistan had each won six team world championships. In the course of the tournament, Australia managed not to lose a single game. In Group A they beat Ireland , Norway and Hong Kong 3-0, followed by 3-0 successes over Sweden and France in the final round . In the semifinals, Australia also won 3-0 against England , but the first two individual games ended only just 3-2 in favor of the Australians. Paul Price defeated Chris Walker , David Palmer prevailed against Mark Chaloner . In the third game Stewart Boswell won 2-0 against Lee Beachill . In the final, Australia met Egypt , who in Group F won 3-0 against the United States and New Zealand and 2-1 against France. In the final round, the Egyptian team then defeated Denmark 3-0 and Canada 2-1. The team met Scotland in the semi-finals : Omar Elborolossy gave Egypt a 3-1 lead against Martin Heath before John White equalized 3-1 against Karim Darwish . Mohammed Abbas won the decisive game against Neil Frankland 3-0.
The final clearly ended 3-0 in favor of Australia. Paul Price won 3-0 against Omar Elborolossy, followed by David Palmer defeating Karim Darwish 3-1. In the third game, which was shortened to two sets of wins, Stewart Boswell won 2-0 against Mohammed Abbas. Third place went to England, who defeated Scotland 3-0.
The participating teams were drawn into six groups according to their placement, the group size was always four teams. Within the groups, the game was played in round robin mode ; the two best-placed teams reached the final round, which was played in the knockout system . In addition, the four third-placed finishers with the highest points reached the final round. At the tournament all places were played out.
All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
