The 5th World Team Championship for Men ( English 1976 Men's World Team Squash Championships ) was held in 1976 in Birmingham , England instead. Birmingham was the second time since 1969 the venue for the tournament. A total of ten teams took part, a new record.
The defending champion was Australia , which for the first time in history not only failed to defend its title, but also lost several games. In the final round, Great Britain and Pakistan each won their encounters against Australia and the Federation of Arab Republics , due to the victory of Great Britain against Pakistan in the preliminary round, the British team became world champions for the first time. The team consisted of Jonathan Leslie , Stuart Courtney , Philip Ayton and John Robinson . With Sweden and Kuwait, two nations celebrated their debut at a world championship.
The participating teams competed in two groups. The group played in round robin mode , with the two best-placed teams moving into the final group. Within this, round robin mode was played again. The results between teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round. All places were played out.
All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
