Defending champion Australia successfully continued their winning streak. As in 1967 , 1969 and 1971 , the Australians remained undefeated. The crew consisted of Mike Donnelly , Dave Wright , Lionel Robberds and Cam Nancarrow . The British team was runner-up again. Third place went to hosts South Africa, ahead of New Zealand and the United States, which first took part in a World Cup.
The participating teams competed in a common group. The group played in round robin mode , and the top team received the title of world champion.
All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
