Milito for Inter am Ball (2009)

Diego Alberto Milito (born June 12, 1979 in Bernal ) is a retired Argentine soccer player . His family is originally from Calabria . He has a brother, Gabriel Milito , who was also a professional footballer.

Milito is called "Il Príncipe" ( German  The Prince ) by the fans, based on the former Uruguayan striker Enzo Francescoli .

Career

In the club

Diego Milito began his footballing career with the Argentine Racing Club , for whom he scored a goal in eleven appearances in his first 1999/2000 season. With Racing he won the Apertura Championship once (2001) .

In the summer of 2003 he moved to Italy and signed a contract with the then Serie B club CFC Genoa . Despite relegation to Serie C1 , Milito established himself as a more accurate striker in Italy during the two years and scored a total of 33 goals in 59 games.

For the 2005/06 season he first moved on loan to Real Saragossa , where his brother Gabriel was under contract at the time. Diego also demonstrated his potential in Spain when he scored four goals against Spanish record champions Real Madrid in the 2006 Copa del Rey semi-finals (6-1). He finished his first season as Real Zaragoza's top scorer with 14 league goals. The final move to Saragossa followed in the summer of 2006 for five million euros . In the 2006/07 season, Milito played himself in the limelight for the first time and was one of the best scorer in the Primera División with 21 goals. After his brother Gabriel moved to FC Barcelona after the 2007/08 season, Diego Milito became team captain of Real Zaragoza.

After Saragossa's relegation to the Segunda División , Milito switched back to CFC Genoa . The season he finished second in the league's top scorer list with 24 goals in 31 games (behind Zlatan Ibrahimović of Inter Milan ). So he played a major role in Genoa's entry into the UEFA Cup .

On June 29, 2009, Inter Milan announced the commitment of Militos for a transfer fee of approx. 22 million euros. In return, Robert Acquafresca moved to the Genoese. At Inter, Milito received a four-year contract and the shirt number 22.

He made his Serie A debut for the Nerazzuri on August 23, 2009 in a 1-1 draw at home against AS Bari . In his second competitive game in the Derby della Madonnina , Milito scored a goal from the penalty spot in the 4-0 win over AC Milan .

On May 22, 2010, Diego Milito scored both goals in Inter Milan's 2-0 win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, making a significant contribution to winning the title. He also scored in the 1-0 in the Coppa Italia final against AS Roma and in the decisive last game of Serie A in the 1-0 against AC Siena. Diego Milito scored a total of 30 competitive goals in his first season at Inter Milan and was named UEFA Player of the Year for his achievements . Surprisingly, however, he was not one of the 23 nominees for the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or .

In August 2010, Milito extended his contract with Inter prematurely until the end of June 2014. On January 24, 2011, Milito was voted best foreign player and best Serie A player of 2010. Even so, his second year at Inter was relatively disappointing. Milito was repeatedly slowed down by injuries and was never able to match his pre-season form. In total, he only scored eight competitive goals, but prepared another nine. Although Milito won the Italian Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup with Inter, of the titles won in 2010, only the Italian Cup could be defended - with Milito making it 3-1 in the final victory over US Palermo .

The 2011/12 season was disappointing for Inter, as it was only sixth in the league. Milito, on the other hand, was able to improve again and was second in the Italian goalscorer list for the third time after 2009 and 2010. He scored a total of 24 league goals, including a four-pack against US Palermo and a hat trick in the Derby della Madonnina .

Also in the 2012/13 season , Milito initially showed good performances and was able to score nine goals in 20 league games. He scored two of these goals in Inter's 3-1 away win in the Derby d'Italia , which ended Juventus Turin's 49-game run without defeat. On February 14, 2013 he tore a cruciate ligament in a Europa League game against CFR Cluj , which forced him to pause the rest of the season. Milito made his comeback on September 22, 2013 in a league game against Sassuolo , in which he scored two goals. However, further injuries prevented him from regaining his form. At the end of the 2013/14 season , his expiring contract was no longer renewed and he left Milan. Shortly afterwards he announced his move back to Argentina to join Racing Club. There he won the Argentine Championship again in 2014.

In the national team

Diego Milito made his debut for the Argentina national team on August 20, 2003 against Uruguay . In the following years the striker was only called up sporadically for the selection of his country. It was only four years after its first use that Milito was nominated for a competition. In the summer of 2007, coach Alfio Basile appointed him to the squad for the Copa America . Milito was a substitute player twice in the course of the tournament and scored one goal. The tournament win he was denied, however, as Argentina lost in the final Brazil .

In May 2010 the attacker was called up for the World Cup in South Africa . In the group stage, Milito came on as a substitute for Nigeria and started against Greece for 80 minutes, but failed to score. In the knockout phase of the tournament, he was no longer used and so could not prevent his team's quarter-finals against Germany .

In the following Copa America in his home country, Milito was in the squad, but was not used and was then no longer called up to the national team.
