Steve Hooker , actually Steven Leslie Hooker; (Born July 16, 1982 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian pole vaulter .

Steve Hooker had his first major international success at the Junior World Championships in 2000, where he finished fourth in the pole vault. At the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2005 World Championships, he did not get beyond qualifying both times.

He won his first title at the 2006 Commonwealth Games with a skipped 5.80 m. At the 2007 World Championships , Hooker finished ninth with 5.76 m. In 2008, Hooker competed in indoor competitions in Europe during the Australian outdoor season. At the World Indoor Championships in Valencia in 2008 , he won the bronze medal with 5.80 m. His greatest achievement was winning the Olympic Games in the same year with 5.96 m, which meant an Olympic record up to the Games in London in 2012 , in which Renaud Lavillenie crossed 5.97 m . He himself got nothing in London. In the final, Hooker jumped no valid attempt.

The Australian proved his position as the world's best pole vaulter in his heyday at the 2009 World Championships when he secured the world title with a jump of 5.90 m. He only jumped twice in the final because of an adductor injury.

Steve Hooker achieved his personal best at an athletics meeting in Boston with 6.06 m in February 2009. At that time he was second in the all-time world best list behind Serhij Bubka .

Hooker's best 100 meters is 10.82 s, he ran it in Perth 2010.

Steve Hooker is 1.88 m tall and had a competition weight of 85 kg. His father Bill Hooker was successful as a middle-distance runner, his mother Erica Hooker as a long jumper.
