Cyril Despres
Cyril Despres (born January 24, 1974 in Fontainebleau , France ) is a French enduro and rally raid driver .
Despres took part in his first Dakar Rally in 2000 (in the motorcycle classification). His first stage win came a year later. In 2003 he finished second and won the Marathon Rally World Cup . In 2005 he won the overall ranking for the first time. After being beaten by his KTM team- mate Marc Coma in 2006 , Despres was able to repeat his success in 2007. At the Central Europe Rally 2008 he was fifth. At the Dakar Rally 2009 he had to deal with punctured tires at the beginning and lost a lot of time, so that at the end of the rally he was only second, well behind Coma.
Despres was particularly criticized at the 2012 Dakar Rally . Six of the first seven drivers got stuck in a mud hole. The Portuguese Paulo Gonçalves helped Despres pull his motorcycle out of the mud, and Despres left Gonçalves in the mud hole as thanks. Only Marc Coma could avoid the hole. The organizers then changed the route. Despres lost time was credited. Coma's lost time was not credited. Gonçalves was sentenced to six hours for allegedly receiving help from locals.
In 2015 Despres took part in the Dakar Rally for the first time in the car classification. With his co-driver Gilles Picard he finished 34th in the overall ranking. In 2016, he drove to seventh overall alongside co-driver David Castera.
Cyril Despres has also won many other marathon rallies. These include victories at the UAE Desert Challenge , the Morocco Rally , the Tunisia Rally and the Por Las Pampas Rally . He was also able to win the ErzbergRodeo in Austria in 2002 and 2003 . In 2007 he finished third at the Baja 1000 .
In July 2016, Despres won the car classification of the Silk Road rally alongside his co-driver David Castera . In 2017 the two repeated this success.
