Hannah Angela Kearney (born February 26, 1986 in Hanover , New Hampshire ) is a former American freestyle skier . She specializes in moguls and dual moguls ( moguls ) and is one of the world's most successful athletes in these disciplines. She was once Olympic champion, three times world champion, four times overall winner of the Freestyle Skiing World Cup and six times winner of the discipline classification. With 46 World Cup victories, she is next to Donna Weinbrecht the most successful athlete on the mogul slope.

biography

Kearney learned to ski at the age of two. In high school , she was a member of Vermont state national teams in both soccer and athletics . From December 2001 she took part in freestyle FIS races . In 2003 she won both the Moguls and the Dual Moguls Junior World Championships. It was used as an ancestor at the 2002 Winter Olympics .

Kearney made her World Cup debut on January 11, 2003 in Mont Tremblant , where she reached 26th place. Just four weeks later, she made it into the top ten for the first time in Steamboat Springs . The 2003/04 season began with a third place in Åre , which was followed by several other podiums. She achieved her first World Cup victory on February 22, 2004 in Naeba , which she followed two weeks later with a second. With that she had already established herself at the top of the world as a 17-year-old. In the 2004/05 World Cup season, Kearney was another four times on the podium, but without being able to win. The only victory of the season she achieved at the 2005 World Cup in Ruka , where she won the gold medal in the Moguls discipline.

In the 2005/06 World Cup season, Kearney won one race and stood on the podium three more times. However, the 2006 Winter Olympics ended in disappointment: due to an unclean landing, she only reached 22nd place in the qualifying round and could not make it to the final. After two third places, she had to end the 2006/07 World Cup season early after tearing the cruciate ligament in her left knee during training . Shortly after the 2007-08 season began, she suffered a concussion and was forced to take another break.

Kearney made an impressive comeback in the 2008/09 season. She won the first World Cup race after her injury break and subsequently won two more. With a total of six podium places, she won the discipline ranking ahead of Jennifer Heil and Margarita Marbler, and came second in the overall World Cup. At the 2009 World Cup in Inawashiro , she was third in the dual moguls discipline. In the 2009/10 World Cup season, Kearney won four competitions and placed third in the discipline ranking. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , she won the gold medal on the moguls.

In the 2010-11 season, Kearney seemed almost unbeatable. With nine wins and a second place, she won both the overall standings and the Moguls discipline standings of the World Cup by a large margin. At the 2011 World Cup in Deer Valley , however, she had to admit defeat to her toughest rival Jennifer Heil in the Moguls competition . In the dual moguls competition she won the bronze medal. Also in the 2011/12 season, Kearney dominated the competition almost at will. She achieved eleven World Cup victories, nine of them in a row. Her worst result of the season was a fifth place. She deliberately decided both the overall World Cup and the Moguls World Cup results.

In October 2012, Kearney fell while training in Zermatt and broke two ribs. Because of this, she missed the start of the 2012/13 season. After a few weeks' delay, she tackled the 2012/13 World Cup season and celebrated six more victories. Shortly before the end of the season, she managed to overtake the previously leading Canadian Justine Dufour-Lapointe , whereupon she won the discipline standings for the fourth time. At the 2013 World Championships in Voss , she won the Moguls gold medal for the second time, plus the dual Moguls bronze medal.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Kearney could not repeat her success of 2010 and won the bronze medal in third place. She was more successful in the World Cup, where she fought an exciting duel with Justine Dufour-Lapointe: With a total of five wins and three further podium places, she secured the Moguls discipline ranking for the fourth time in a row and the overall World Cup ranking for the third time. At the 2015 World Championships in Kreischberg , she won the dual moguls world championship title and the silver medal in the moguls competition. In the 2014/15 World Cup season, Kearney stood on the podium a total of eight times (including four times as the winner), which means she once again won the overall standings and the discipline standings. With her 46th and last World Cup victory on March 15, 2015, Kearney equalized the 18-year-old record of her compatriot Donna Weinbrecht .

After the US championships at the end of March 2015, Hannah Kearney retired from active competitive sports.
