After two victories at the beginning of the 1988/89 season, she missed the World Championships at Oberjoch and could not quite build on her previous form in the three years that followed. In February 1992 she won at the Olympic Games of Albertville the bronze medal.

Hattestad had their strongest season in 1992/93. She celebrated five of her ten World Cup victories, once again won the discipline and was crowned world champion in Altenmarkt - Zauchensee . In February 1994, to the delight of the home crowd, she won the Olympic gold medal in the final in Lillehammer , making her the first freestyle Olympic champion in her country. After three second places in a row, she finished the season for the fourth time in her career in second place in the Moguls discipline.

Following the Olympic season, Hattestad retired from active competitive sports at the age of 27.
