Claudi Martínez i Imbert

Claudi Martínez i Imbert (* 1845 in Barcelona ; † 1919 there ) was a Catalan composer , pianist and music teacher .

life and work

Martínez joined the Escolania de la Mercè de Barcelona as a child , which was directed by the composer Bernat Calvó Puig . He was then a music student of Bernat Calvó and studied piano with Pere Tintorer .

He quickly made a name for himself as a pianist and piano teacher. He accompanied the violinists Pablo Sarasate and Jesús Monasterio (1836–1903) at concerts in Barcelona .

In 1872 he founded the Societat de Quartets de Barcelona together with the two brothers Cosme and Josep Ribera , the first music organization to regularly perform chamber music in Barcelona. He was also a founding member of the Associació Musical de Barcelona (Music Association of Barcelona) and the Societat Catalana de Concerts . (Catalan Concert Association) He was the head of the Catalan section of the Sociedad Artística de Socorros Mutuos . In 1901 he was one of the co-founders of the Barcelona Associació Wagneriana (Richard Wagner Association).

As a composer, Martínez wrote a trio for piano, violin and violoncello (1869), the choral work La Primavera (1888, Der Frühling) as well as various chamber and church music. He has received several awards for his work. The choral work La Primavera was performed at the World's Fair in Barcelona in 1888.

Martínez was one of the musicians who supported the Orfeó Català in its early days.
