Pere Tintorer i Sagarra

Pere Tintorer i Sagarra (* 1814 in Palma de Mallorca , † March 11, 1891 in Barcelona ) was a Catalan pianist, composer and music teacher. Together with his student Joan Baptista Pujol i Riu, Tintorer is considered to be the founder of the Catalan School of Pianists , from which music artists such as Enric Granados and Alicia de Larrocha emerged.

Career

Tintorer was the son of Catalan parents who had emigrated to Mallorca from Catalonia because of the Napoleonic invasion . In 1821, at the age of seven, he returned to Barcelona with his family. In 1822 he went to music and piano studies with Ramon Vilanova in Barcelona and joined the choir of the Barcelona Cathedral . Between 1820 and 1823 he was a member of the music group Peret de la flauta led by the composer Marià Obiols . In 1823 he entered the Barcelona Conservatory and studied composition and piano.

From 1830 Tintorer completed postgraduate studies at the Madrid Conservatory in piano with Pedro Albéniz and in composition with Ramón Carnicer . In 1834 he continued his studies with Pierre Joseph Guillaume Zimmerman in Paris. Two years later, Tintorer settled in Lyon for 14 years, where he worked as a professor at the city music school and as a music professor at the university. During this time he took piano lessons from Franz Liszt himself . In 1849 he returned to Barcelona. He founded the first private piano school in town. From 1883 he became director of the piano department of the Conservatori del Liceu . Among his students were Enrique Campano , Claudi Martínez-Imbert , Maria Luisa Guerra , Ernest Marraco , Joan Baptista Pujol , Baudili Sabater and Agustí Salvans .

Tintorer composed about a hundred works, including two symphonies, religious music, chamber music, and numerous piano pieces, including a full piano course.

In 1853 the French Empress Eugénie de Montijo awarded him the silver medal for the composition of his mass on the Ascension of Christ. From the hands of Isabella II of Spain he received the Order de Isabel la Católica for the composition of his Stabat mater s . Tintorer was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

Tintorer is buried in the Poblenou cemetery in Barcelona (Dep. I, illa 1, interior nínxol 778).
