Grand Slam (eventing)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grand Slam of Eventing (in German: Grand Slam of eventing equestrian sport) is a special eventing award sponsored by the watch manufacturer Rolex , which has been advertised since 1999.

In order to receive the special price, the following tournaments, which are all advertised as CCI 4 * , must be won in a row:

At the beginning the Grand Slam of Eventing was endowed with US $ 250,000 , later the endowment was increased to US $ 350,000. In order to win the prize, it is not relevant which victory is started with. However, a particular difficulty arises from the fact that the tournaments in Lexington and Badminton are held on two consecutive weekends and therefore have to be ridden regularly with two different horses.

The first winner of the special award was Pippa Funnell . She won the CCI 4 * Lexington 2003 with Primmore's Pride , the CCI 4 * Badminton 2003 with Supreme Rock and the CCI 4 * Burghley 2003 with Primmore's Pride . As a result, she won US $ 250,000 in addition to the regular prize money.

Second winner of the Grand Slam and thus US $ 350,000 was Michael Jung : After winning in Burghley in 2015 with Sam and Lexington in 2016 with Rocana , he also finished badminton with Sam in first place.

Riders who narrowly missed out on winning the Grand Slam of Eventing were:

  • Andrew Hoy : He won the Kentucky Three Day Event (with Master Monarch ) and the Badminton Horse Trials ( Moonfleet ) in 2006, but just missed out on the 2006 Burghley Horse Trials and finished second with Moonfleet .
  • Oliver Townend (2009/2010): Townend won the Badminton Horse Trials 2009 with Flint Curtis and the Burghley Horse Trials 2009 with Carousel Quest . At the Kentucky Horse Trials 2010 he competed with Ashdale Cruise Master and ODT Master Rose . However, he crashed with Ashdale Cruise Master on the cross-country route and was hospitalized. He suffered broken ribs and a broken collarbone, so that the next day he could no longer start jumping with ODT Master Rose (with whom he previously finished the area in seventh place).
  • Oliver Townend (2017/2018): After winning the Burghley Horse Trials 2017 with Ballaghmor Class , Oliver Townend also won the Kentucky Three-Day Event 2018 (with Cooley Master Class ). Townend had another chance of winning the Grand Slam in badminton. After the dressage he was in the lead with Ballaghmor Class and in 15th place with Cooley SRS . 7.2 minus points from the terrain with both horses and two jumping errors with Ballaghmor Class left him behind Jonelle Price, however, in the final result he came in second and fifth . After his cross country rides in badminton, Oliver Townend received a warning for excessive whip use.

All three tournaments that are part of the Grand Slam of Eventing have also been part of the FEI Classics since 2008 .
