Kwak Yoon-gy ( kor. 곽윤기 ; born December 26, 1989 in Seoul ) is a South Korean short tracker .

Career

Kwak's first international appearance took place at the Junior World Championships 2005 in Belgrade, where he immediately won a silver over 1000 m and two bronze medals. He then went into the next seasons in any major international event at the start and only returned in October 2007, back when it was first for the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup of the 2007/08 season was nominated. Here, too, he achieved good placings in his first race and the podium in the second competition. Since he concentrated almost exclusively on the shortest distance, 500 m, he achieved second place in this discipline in the overall World Cup behind his compatriot Sung Si-bak . Nevertheless, he also managed a podium place over 1000 m when he was second in Kobe . Overall, he won an individual World Cup, over 500 m in Québec City , he was also used in all relay World Cups, each of which went to the South Korean team, so that there were two more World Cup victories for him. He won bronze at the 2008 Team World Championships in Harbin .

The Short Track World Cup 2008/09 began for Kwak with another victory, this time over the 1000 m and a third place over 500 m. In the further course of the season she reached second place once and third place over 500 m and second place twice and victory twice over 1000 m. With the relay, he took second place twice. At the Short Track World Championships in Vienna in 2009 , he won the silver medal over 500 m and 1500 m. At the subsequent team world championships in 2009 in Heerenveen , he won the gold medal. He finished the season in fourth place in the overall world cup over 500 m and in second place in the overall world cup over 1000 m. At the beginning of the following season he won the World Cup in Beijing over 500 m and with the relay. This was followed by two more victories in the relay and a third place over 1000 m. In his first Olympic participation in 2010 in Vancouver , he won silver with the relay. He finished fourth over 500 m. In March 2010, at the 2010 World Championships in Sofia , he won the silver medal in the all-round, over 1000 m and over 3000 m, and gold over 1500 m and relay. At the subsequent Short Track Team World Championships in 2010 in Bormio , he won gold. He finished the season in seventh place in the overall World Cup over 1000 m and fourth in the overall World Cup over 500 m. After he was banned for the following season by the South Korean federation because of prohibited agreements in the national elimination races, he won four world cups over 1000 m in the 2011/12 season and once with the relay. He achieved a total of 13 podium places in the World Cup and won the overall World Cup over 1000 m for the first time at the end of the season. In the overall world cup over 1500 m he took third place. At the 2012 World Championships in Shanghai he won the bronze medal in the 500 m and the relay and the silver medal in the 1500 m. In the all-around competition, over 1000 m and over 3000 m, he became world champion.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Kwak reached third place over 1000 m, second place over 1500 m and first place with the relay at the World Cup in Calgary . In the further course of the season he won three runs over 1000 m and three runs with the relay. Over 1500 m at the World Cup in Sochi , he came third. At the end of the season, like last year, he won the overall World Cup over 1000 m. In the 2014/15 season he won two World Cup wins with the relay and one over 500 m. He also came in second place three times and third place twice in the World Cup. In the overall world cup over 500 m he took third place. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he won the 1500 m World Cup in Montreal . At the following World Cup in Toronto , he also won over 1500 m. Over 1000 m he achieved third place and second place with the relay. Three third and two second places followed. He also won the 1000 m in Shanghai and finally won the World Cup over 1500 m. In the world cup over 1000 m he finished fifth. At the season highlight of the 2016 World Championships in Seoul , he won the bronze medal with the relay. In the 2017/18 season he won the season in Seoul and finished second in the season in Shanghai. At the season highlight, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished fourth in the relay. At the 2018 World Championships in Montreal, he won the gold medal with the relay.
