Sung first competed internationally at the 2003 Junior World Championships, where he immediately won four medals, including a gold one with the relay. With the Korean team he also appeared in the Short Track World Cup for the first time in October 2004 , where he achieved his first victory with his first start. Sung also did well at the Winter Universiade 2005, where he won the 1000 meter title. Although he again had a podium place with the relay in the last two World Cup races of the 2004/05 season and also reached the final in the individual over 1500 meters, he did not take part in any international races in the following 2005/06 season. He only started at the Universiade in winter 2006/07. In this, however, he achieved the title over all routes, so that he finally had five victories.
Sung only returned to the World Cup in the 2007/08 Short Track World Cup . There he achieved eight individual successes, at least two on all routes, he also won the 500-meter World Cup and was third in the short track world rankings behind his compatriots Lee Ho-suk and Ahn Hyun-soo . In the World Cup 2008/09 he also started well with two victories in the first World Cups.
At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , he won the silver medal over 500 meters behind Charles Hamelin through the qualification of Apolo Ohno . He finished seventh over the 1000 meter distance and fifth over 1500 meters. With the 5000 meter relay, he finally won his second silver medal.
After the 2010/11 season, Sung ended his active short track career at the age of just 23. Before that, he won again gold with the relay and bronze over 1500 meters at the Winter Asian Games 2011 in Almaty .
