The baseball league , officially Ben's baseball league since 2020, is the highest German league in baseball , in which the German baseball champions are played every year . The league is divided into the Bundesliga North and South, each with eight teams. The most successful participants are the Mannheim Tornados with 10 championships won.
mode
The Bundesliga baseball game mode is divided into two parts: the regular season and the postseason , in which the teams are divided into the interleague round with subsequent play-offs and play-downs based on their placements in the regular season . The regular season falls in spring (March / April to June / July), the postseason in the second half of the year. Teams from the regional associations of Berlin / Brandenburg, Hamburg, Central Germany, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein are assigned to the Northern League, while the Southern Bundesliga includes the regional associations of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse and Southwest. Historically, there have been shifts here, so that, for example, the two Cologne clubs Cardinals and Dodgers already played in both the Bundesliga North and the Bundesliga South.
Regular season
The 1st Bundesliga is divided into the north and south groups, each with eight teams. These play against each other in a round-trip round, with two games over nine innings being played on a weekend on each game day . As is usual in baseball, in the event of a tie, the winner will be determined in extra innings according to the regular number of innings. In addition, a mercy rule applies, in which the game ends prematurely if a team with ten points or more leads two innings before the end of the stipulated number of innings.
The four best-placed teams in each group of the 1st Bundesliga play in an interleague round with subsequent play-offs for the German championship, while the other teams in each group determine possible relegations in the play-downs.
Interleague round
In the interleague round, the top four of both groups play in a double round against the top four of the other season, with both matches between the teams being played on one day in a row as double headers in a ball park, so that each team against each other two teams has two home games and two away games against the other two teams.
Play-offs
After the interleague round, the seeding list for the playoffs is determined; this only includes the games of the regular season and the interleague round between the eight teams involved in the interleague round. The 1st against the 8th, the 2nd against the 7th, the 3rd against the 6th and the 4th against the 5th
All encounters are played out as best-of-five . The final is played in individual games, while the quarter and semi-finals are played as double headers on two weekends (on Saturdays). A possibly necessary game 5 of the quarter or semi-finals will be played on Sunday of the same weekend.
The fixtures in the quarter and semi-finals are designed in such a way that the team better placed in the table has the first two games of the series at home and plays 3 to 5 away for all potentially decisive games; Game 5 is played in the ball park of the team that is less well placed, but the away team has the right of look-up that the home team would otherwise have.
In the final, the team that was better placed in the regular season initially has home rights for games 1 and 2, the series then switches to the worse-placed team for games 3 and 4. A possibly necessary game 5 takes place again with the better placed team.
Play-downs
The play-downs are played separately between the teams north and south that do not qualify for the play-offs. In four teams, the fifth against the eighth and the sixth against the seventh each play a best-of-five series, whereupon the losers in another best-of-five series determine the relegated team. If there are three teams, each team plays two home and two away games against the other two teams. The last placed in this round is relegated.
Before 2013, the play-downs were played in the two play-down groups North and South, in which the four teams played against each other in double headers, as in the regular season. The victories and defeats from the final table of the regular season were taken over. For the first two of this round, the season was over with the non-relegation; the last of the table was the direct relegated to the corresponding group of the second Bundesliga and was replaced by the champion of this group as promoted. The penultimate of the final account had to play against the table runner-up of the corresponding group of the 2nd Bundesliga in a best-of-three series for the last starting place for the 1st Bundesliga of the next season. He played away in the first game, in the second and a possible third game he had home rights.
history
The baseball Bundesliga has been the top division in German baseball since 1984 and has been played in two seasons, north and south, with the exception of the years 1985 to 1989. The Mannheim Tornados are the only team that has played in the Bundesliga without interruption since the founding season.
