Baseball Bundesliga 1996

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1996 Baseball Bundesliga was the 13th season of the Baseball Bundesliga . The Trier Cardinals defended their title, won for the first time last year, with a clear final victory against the Mannheim Tornados .

Regular season

The mode remained unchanged compared to the previous year: eight teams each played in the two seasons North and South to participate and place in the seed lists for the play-offs , in which the German baseball champions 1996 were then played in the knockout system .

1. Bundesliga North

The Berlin Bats and the Paderborn Untouchables started the season as newcomers. While the Bats immediately finished second behind the sovereign Lokstedt Stealers and thus reached the play-offs, the Untouchables had to be content with the penultimate place. With the withdrawal of the Berlin Sluggers and the Berlin Bats after the season, this did not mean relegation for the Paderborn team. Other play-off participants were the St. Pauli Knights and the Berlin Sluggers, while last year's semi-finalist in the play-offs, the Cologne Cardinals, were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga as a founding member of the baseball league after 12 years of membership in the German baseball upper house had to.

1st Bundesliga South

In the 1996 season, the Cologne Dodgers started again as promoted players in the Bundesliga - but this time in the southern season, so that Cologne had both a team in the northern season and one in the southern season. The second climbers were the Ladenburg Romans, who finished last in the table with only two wins. But neither they nor the penultimate Regensburg legionnaires had to relegate the following year due to a regional restructuring of the Bundesliga.

The play-off places were secured by the Trier Cardinals with equal points in front of their later final opponent, the Mannheim Tornados. Just one victory behind, the Bonn Capitals finished their regular season in third place ahead of the Mainz Athletics.

Play-offs

The knockout round was dominated by the teams from the southern season: three teams qualified for the semi-finals, only the Lokstedt Stealers broke into this phalanx. With their semi-final defeat against the Mannheim Tornados they made a pure southern final possible, in which the Trier Cardinals had no problems defending their previous year's title.
