German champion 2009: Heidenheim Heideköpfe

The German Baseball-Bundesliga in 2009 launched on 4 April 2009 with the kick-off double header of the Baseball Bundesliga between the Saarlouis Hornets and the Mannheim Tornados , which ended with a victory division.

The Regensburg Legionnaires went into the season as defending champions , the only climbers were the Pulheim Gophers . The German champions became the Heidenheim Heideköpfe , who prevailed 3-2 in the final on August 30, 2009 against the Mannheim Tornados and were thus able to win their first German championship .

Regular season

In both the Bundesliga North and South, only seven instead of the nominal eight teams competed, so there was no direct relegation in either of the two leagues. In the north, the Neunkirchen Nightmares rose in the preseason as the bottom of the play-downs table and the relegation pairing between the Hannover Regents against the Dohren Wild Farmers was canceled after the first game, as the Hannover Regents announced their withdrawal from the Bundesliga, but at the same time the Dohren Wild Farmers renounced the now without a fight ascent. The only newcomers are now the Pulheim Gophers , who were able to become runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga North behind the Paderborn second team that was not eligible for promotion. In the south, the Neuchâtel Atomics went straight back to the 2nd Bundesliga after the previous year's promotion. The Gauting Indians won the relegation game against the Bad Homburg Hornets 2-0 and secured their starting place for the 2009 season. But since both the Ladenburg Romans , champions of the 2nd Bundesliga South 2008, and the potential successors of the Bad Homburg Hornets renounced promotion to the 1st Baseball Bundesliga, only seven teams competed against each other in the Bundesliga South.

Media presence

During the 2009 season, the Bundesliga clubs greatly expanded their media presence on the Internet. The focus was particularly on live tickers, some of which were implemented using specially programmed live tickers on the club's website or using Twitter . In cooperation with zaplive.tv, the Saarlouis Hornets were able to offer a live video stream and video-on-demand of their home games.

1. Bundesliga North

As in the previous year, the Solingen Alligators won the Northern Championship ahead of the Paderborn Untouchables. Furthermore, the Dortmund Wanderers were able to improve by one place to 3rd place in the final table compared to the previous year, the last play-off place went to the HSV Stealers. The Pulheim Gophers had to be content with the last place as a climber, but with only one victory behind the Cologne Cardinals and the Bonn Capitals, they still had a chance of staying up in the play-down round.

1st Bundesliga South

In the Bundesliga South, the same four teams qualified for the play-offs as in the previous year. The Buchbinder Legionnaires only played three games against the second-placed Heidenheim Heideköpfe and twice against the Haar Disciples on the last day of the match, thus securing the championship in the south. As in the previous year, the Mannheim Tornados followed in third place. The last play-off place was decided in a three-way battle between the Mainz Athletics, the Haar Disciples and the Saarlouis Hornets. Due to the 7: 8 defeat of the Saarlouiser in a direct duel against the Athletics, they also lost the play-off place to the Mainz team, in between two surprising victories against the Buchbinder Legionnaires pushed the Haar Disciples. The Gauting Indians landed in last place of the regular season, but they were only three victories behind the 4th place.

final

In the final of the German baseball championship 2009, the Heidenheim Heideköpfe and the Mannheim Tornados faced each other from August 22, 2009 in a purely Baden-Württemberg duel . The Heidenheim Heideköpfe had the opportunity to win their first title and the Mannheim Tornados as record champions had the chance to build on previous heydays.

The Tornados won the first game 4-1 thanks to the surprising use of their pitcher Martin Dewald in Heidenheim, but the Heideköpfe were able to equalize in the final series with a 5-0 shut-out success the following day . After the 5-2 victory, the Tornados took a 2-1 lead in the series, so they only had to win one game in front of their home crowd. This did not succeed, Heidenheim scored the decisive two victories to win the championship with 15: 3 and 3: 1 on the final Sunday.
