Baseball Bundesliga 1997

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Baseball Bundesliga 1997 was the 14th season of the Baseball Bundesliga and ended with the 11th German Championship of the Mannheim Tornados .

Regular season

The regular season was played in two seasons (North and South) with eight teams each, this has not been the case since 1980, of which the best four each qualified for the play-off round.

1. Bundesliga North

With the withdrawal of the Berlin Challengers and the Berlin Bats , the Paderborn Untouchables as the penultimate in the baseball Bundesliga in 1996 did not have to relegate. The Wolfsburg Yahoos were promoted . In order to keep the league at the target strength of eight teams, the teams of the Cologne Dodgers and the Bonn Capitals were transferred from the season south to the Bundesliga north. Both teams coped well with the changeover and reached the play-offs alongside the Paderborn Untouchables and the Lokstedt Stealers . The St. Pauli Knights had to relegate as bottom of the table.

The Berlin Phoenix team was created through the merger of the first division teams of the Berlin Bats, Sluggers and Berlin Challengers as well as the second division team of the Berlin Crusaders and played in the Bundesliga and in the B-pool of the European Cup under the Bats' playing authorization.

With the transfer of the Cologne Dodgers and the Bonn Cardinals to the Bundesliga North, no teams from the Bundesliga South had to relegate, so that the Regensburg Legionnaires and Ladenburg Romans were also represented in the Bundesliga in 1997. The newcomers were the Tübingen Hawks and the Friedberg Braves, both of which celebrated their premieres in the Bundesliga.

In the end, the league was split in two: the play-off places were secured by the Mannheim Tornados, the Trier Cardinals, the Mainz Athletics and the Regensburg Legionnaires only separated by one victory. At the end of the table the Mannheim Amigos had to relegate from the Bundesliga for the second time after 1988.
