history

Founding years (1987 to 2007)

The club has its origins in the baseball department of the Regensburg Gymnastics Association founded on March 25, 1987 . In the first year, the team competed in the Bayern League and reached fourth place. In 1989, however, the department moved to SV Schwabelweis . In the same year, the young team was also promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South. The legionnaires were only able to establish themselves there in 1992. Two years later they were promoted to the top division, the 1st Bundesliga South. In 1997, Regensburg won the German Cup for the first time , and in the following year they even won the European Cup Winners' Cup ( B pool ) in the newly built Armin Wolf Arena . The baseball players established themselves not only in the 1st Bundesliga, but also in Regensburg itself. The sport, which in general received little media attention in Germany, is now enjoying great popularity in the cathedral city. Both in 2006 and 2007 the legionaries became German runners-up, which meant that they were still denied the national championship title.

Success series (2008 to 2013)

In 2008 the association was named after the main sponsor Buchbinder Rent-a-Car as Buchbinder Legionnaires . 14 years after promotion to the 1st Bundesliga and 11 years after winning the first cup , the legionaries with coach Martin Helmig won the German championship for the first time in 2008, a success that was repeated in the 2010 final against Heidenheim Heideköpfe . In 2011 you could win the third title in the club's history against the Paderborn Untouchables . In 2012 and 2013 the legionnaires succeeded in defending their title against the Solingen Alligators , which means they can now boast a total of five championship titles (four of them last in a row).

Restructuring and new boarding school (2014 to 2017)

At the end of the 2014 season, the Buchbinder legionaries parted ways with trainer Martin Helmig. He was followed by a five-person team of trainers, consisting of Martin Brunner, Stefan Müller, Ivan Rodriguez, Chris Howard and Kai Gronauer. In 2015 they lost in front of 2500 spectators in the Armin Wolf Arena in the fifth final game 7: 8 against Heidenheim Heideköpfe . The newly built baseball boarding school was opened on September 5, 2015.
