Martin Helmig

Martin Helmig (born June 28, 1961 in Mannheim ) is a German baseball coach. Before his coaching career, he played ice hockey and baseball as a professional athlete . Helmig is considered the most successful German baseball player.

Life

Career as a player

As a child, Helmig played ice hockey in winter and baseball in summer. He came to the Mannheim ERC in 1969 , where he played ice hockey until 1976. The following year he became German youth champion with EV Füssen and from 1978 to 1980 he played for VfL Bad Nauheim in the ice hockey Bundesliga .

In 1981 Helmig went to the USA on a scholarship and played baseball at colleges in Palm Springs and Riverside . Then he played in Anzi in the first Italian league. With the Haarlem Nicols he became Dutch champion in 1985. At the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles , he took part in spring training for the American minor leagues .

In Germany, Helmig was German runner-up in 1987 with the Cologne Cardinals . With the Mannheim Amigos he was able to become German champion in 1992 . In 1994 he reached third place with the Leonberg Lobsters. In 1995 and 1996 he won the German championship with the Trier Cardinals . In 1998 Helmig was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the German Baseball and Softball Association as the third member .

Career as a coach

In 1999 Helmig started as a sports director and player coach at the Paderborn Untouchables and led the team to six German championships (1999, 2001-2005).

In 2008 he switched to the Buchbinder Legionnaires as a trainer . With the Regensburg team he won five German championships in 2008 and 2010-2013. In the winter of 2011/12 Helmig was once again active in ice hockey at EV Regensburg , initially as a motivational coach, later as the main coach.

After his dismissal from the Buchbinder Legionnaires in 2014, Helmig switched to the Bayern division baseball club Deggendorf Dragons as sports director.

From June 2016 to 2018 Helmig was the head coach of the German national baseball team .

From 2019 he will take over the position of trainer and sports director at the Bayern division Garching Atomics.

Personal and family

Martin Helmig lives near Regensburg . He is married and has two children. Martin Helmig received the Christophorus Medal in 2012 for participating in the rescue of a mother and her 7-year-old son from Naab. Helmig's father, Claus T. Helmig , was the first German to receive a professional contract in a farm team for the Baltimore Orioles in 1956 and was inducted into the German Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. His uncle Jürgen C. Helmig is also a member of the German Hall of Fame.
