The German national baseball team represents Germany on an international level in baseball , for example in the context of friendly matches or international tournaments. Her greatest success was the Vice European Championship in 1957, and she also achieved bronze seven times in this competition.

history

The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin are usually seen as the origin of professional baseball in Germany . As part of this, on August 12, 1936, a demonstration game between two US American teams - a "World Champions Roster" and a "US Olympics Roster" took place. The game was played in the Olympiastadion in Berlin in front of almost 100,000 spectators.

The first public appearance of the national team was at the first European baseball championship in 1954. The team finished last among the four participating teams. In 1957 the European Championship was held in Mannheim and the German national team took second place, their best placement in the tournament to date ( as of September 8, 2018 ). In 1969 the tournament was held in Wiesbaden and Germany reached 4th place. Overall, the German national team has so far been able to achieve second place, seven times third and six times fourth place at the European Championship. In 2019 the European Championships will be held in Bonn and Solingen .

Since 2018, the Super 6 has been held as another European tournament , in which the six top European teams, based on the European Championship placements in the previous year, take part. Germany was able to qualify for the first edition of the Super 6 thanks to its placement in fourth place at the 2016 European Baseball Championship .

The first participation of the German national baseball team in the baseball world championship did not take place until the 20th edition of the annual tournament in 1972. In the first two appearances in 1972 and 1973, the team could not win a single game of the tournament. In the years that followed, the team was only able to celebrate a few successes at the World Championships. The baseball world championship was finally dissolved in 2011 and replaced by the World Baseball Classic , in which the German national team has never successfully qualified.
