Klaus Hopfensperger

Klaus Hopfensperger (born January 18, 1981 in Regensburg ) is a former German baseball player . Hopfensperger played for the Buchbinder Legionnaires Regensburg in the baseball league from 1996 to 2010 . As a national player, he took part in an Olympic qualification, five European championships and the 2007 World Cup.

Life

Klaus Hopfensperger started playing baseball with the Regensburg legionaries when he was 12 years old. At the age of 15, he played for the first time in 1996 for the legionnaires in the Bundesliga baseball. In 15 years the Right Fielder played 441 Bundesliga games for Regensburg. With a batting average of .367, 540 hits and 68 home runs he was one of the best German baseball players of his time.

From 1997 to 2010 Hopfensperger wore the jersey of the German national team. For Germany he took part in the European Championships in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010. He played in the 2007 Baseball World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Qualification (both in Taiwan).

In March 2011, Klaus Hopfensperger ended his playing career. On September 20, 2015, the Buchbinder legionaries honored him by declaring his shirt number 24 to be a retired number . It will not be given to any other player in the future.

Hopfensperger studied teaching for secondary schools. He lives with his family in Munich, where he is the manager of a bilingual Montessori kindergarten.

Sporting successes

Klaus Hopfensperger was German baseball champion in 2008 and 2010 with the Buchbinder Legionaries, and cup winners in 1997 and 2002–2006. In the playoffs of the 2010 season he was named Most Valuable Player , and in 2006 he was named Best Batter of the 1st Bundesliga South. With the national team he won the bronze medal at the 2010 European Championships in Stuttgart. Even after the end of his career, Hopfensperger remained the most successful player in the legionnaires' history. He holds numerous club records, including 540 hits, 390 RBIs and 68 home runs (as of September 2015).
