The Ingolstadt Schanzer are a baseball club from Ingolstadt .

history

The club was founded in 1985 as the Schanzer Sport Club and is the oldest active baseball club in Bavaria . In 1986 it was accepted into the German Baseball and Softball Association (DBV) and the baseball field was built in the same year .

The Schanzer's first baseball field was built in-house in Ingolstadt on Peisserstraße. In 1990 the company moved to the north-west district sports facility, first to the hard court, then in 2000 to a baseball field on Neuburger Strasse that was specially built for the Schanzer. In the same year the baseball players became members of TV 1861 Ingolstadt eV The Schanzer Sport Club 1985 eV continues to exist as a sponsoring association.

The first chairman of the Schanzer Sport Club Ingolstadt 1985 eV was Martin Miller. As chairman of the Schanzer, he played a key role in the founding of the Bavarian Baseball and Softball Association and was DBV President from 1988 to 2001. From 2005 to 2011 he was President of the Confederation of European Baseball , the European baseball umbrella organization. He has been a member of the German Baseball Hall of Fame since 2001.

The team name Schanzer is the name for people from Ingolstadt in general and is used by a large number of clubs and institutions in Ingolstadt . It is derived from the history of a state fortress and therefore from "entrench". As a result, the name of the Schanzer baseball field is also "Die Schanz".

The first team played their first season in 1986 in the then second-class Oberliga Süd. For many years it was played in the second highest division in Germany. One of the club's greatest successes is the promotion to the 1st Bundesliga South in 1997. The 1998 season in the 1st Bundesliga was marked by many defeats and resulted in direct relegation with only 6 wins in 40 games, but it is the only one Time that you competed in the top German league. After winning the Bayern Cup in 1990, this was the greatest success in the history of the first men's team. A curiosity in the club's history is that the men's 1 has never been able to win their league. So far, all the promotions have been made second, third or even fourth. Only the men 2 provided the only league championship in the state league so far in 2007.

In 1987, an Ingolstadt student who had come to baseball with the Schanzern founded what is now the 1st Bundesliga club Regensburg Legionaries .

Training and young talent

Numerous successes were achieved early on in the youth sector. The following titles at the Bavarian Championships could be achieved.

  • Bavarian student master live pitching: 2002

The first Bavarian to get a professional contract from a Major League Baseball team was brought to baseball by the Ingolstadt Schanzern. Pascal Amon played several seasons in the student and youth team of Ingolstadt before he was hired by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016 after further training at the baseball boarding school in Regensburg .
