The German baseball championship 2008 started the season on April 5, 2008 with the first day of the 1. Baseball Bundesliga North, the Bundesliga South followed suit one day later with the start of the season. The season ended on September 27, 2008 in Regensburg with the fifth game in the final of the German championship with a 10-0 win for the Regensburg Legionnaires over the Mannheim Tornados , whereby the Regensburg team won their first championship title.

Regular season

The eight teams in the North and South Bundesliga each played a home and an away game against each other and played their matches as double headers over nine innings each . Each team had played 28 games after the regular season, four against every other team in their group.

1. Bundesliga North

In the first Bundesliga North, the Solingen Alligators went through to a march; After the end of the regular season, the 27 victories faced only one defeat, which they suffered 4-8 on June 22, 2008 at the runner-up in the Bundesliga North, the Paderborn Untouchables . But Paderborn only lost its three games against Solingen during the entire season, so that these two teams could clearly stand out from the rest of the league.
On the table positions 3 to 5 with the Cologne Cardinals , the promoted Dortmund Wanderers and the Bonn Capitals three teams were tied again. Due to the direct comparison, the Bonn team had to be satisfied with fifth place and thus missed the play-offs . As a special feature of the 2008 Bundesliga season, Enorbel Marquez Ramirez, pitcher of the Solingen Alligators, was able to achieve the first perfect game over 9 innings in Bundesliga history on May 25, 2008 in the first game of the double headers against the Bonn Capitals .

1st Bundesliga South

From the start of the season, a duel between the Heidenheim Heideköpf and the Buchbinder Legionnaires emerged in the Bundesliga South , which the Heideköpf finally won after the Regensburg team topped the table for a long time. Behind them followed the Mannheim Tornados and defending champion Mainz Athletics with equal points ; The Mannheimers won the direct comparison 3: 1. As in the previous year, it was n't enough for the Saarlouis Hornets for the play-offs, but they took most of the wins into the play-downs, in which they met the Haar Disciples , the Gauting Indians and the somewhat relegated Neuenburg Atomics .

Play-downs

Play-downs North

In the play-downs of the Bundesliga North, orderly conditions quickly set in: after the first match day, the Bonn Capitals made the non-relegation perfect due to their large lead from the regular season, and the HSV Stealers can also win 10: 2 in the Follow up play-downs quickly. On the first match day of the second half of the season, the Hanover Regents secure the relegation place, so that the Neunkirchen Nightmares as direct relegated teams are already three games before the end.
The relegation pairing between the Hanover Regents against the Dohren Wild Farmers was canceled after the first game because the Hanover Regents announced their withdrawal from the Bundesliga, but at the same time the Dohren Wild Farmers renounced the promotion without a fight. The only newcomers are now the Pulheim Gophers , who were able to become runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga North behind the Paderborn second team that was not eligible for promotion.

Playdowns South

Even in the south, the play-downs do not change the table situation and so Saarlouis and Haar can secure the non-relegation places. The Neuchâtel Atomics become the elevator team and go straight back to the 2nd Bundesliga. The Gauting Indians have to go into relegation against the Bad Homburg Hornets , which they clearly win 2-0 and will therefore also start in the 1st Bundesliga South next season. Due to the fact that the Ladenburg Romans , champions of the 2nd Bundesliga South, have not been promoted, the Bad Homburg Hornets can still move up to the Bundesliga.

The play-offs began with the quarter-finals on August 2, 2008 and ended with the last game of the best-of-five series in the final on September 27, 2008.
In the quarter-finals, only one team from the Bundesliga North, the Solingen Alligators, was able to prevail, as the Mannheim Tornados prevailed 3-2 against the more highly rated Paderborn Untouchables. In the decisive fifth game, the Mannheimers were only able to achieve a narrow 9: 8 victory in the ninth inning with two points. In the semifinals, the Buchbinder Legionaries and the Mannheim Tornados each won 3-0 against their rivals from Solingen and Heidenheim, respectively, and thus clearly qualified for the final. The Mannheimers again managed a surprise against the higher rated Heideköpfe, against whom they could split twice in the regular season.
In the final, the teams took turns winning the games. The legionnaires won the opening game on September 13, 2008 6: 3, but one day later Mannheim was able to restore the equalizer in the series with a 12: 5 victory in a foreign place. The two games in Mannheim on September 20 and 21, 2008 were played at the same time as the German softball championship 2008 , so that the first game was organized as a night game , which the guests from Regensburg won with 5: 1.
