The Saarlouis Hornets are the baseball and softball department of TV 1872 Saarlouis .

history

The Saarlouis Hornets were founded in October 1992 as a department of TV 1872 Saarlouis. The founding members were Holger Engels, Tom Gapp, Christoph Rass, Uli Rass and Christian Schu, who had previously played together in the Saarland Indians baseball club in Völklingen , which has now been dissolved .

baseball

In their first season in 1993, the Saarlouis Hornets were able to win the championship tied with the TV St. Ingbert Devils in the regional league. From 1994 to 1998 the first men's team was steadily promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South, before being promoted to the 1st Bundesliga South in the 2000 season with 2nd place. In the first year in the Bundesliga, 7th place was achieved, 6th place the following year and 5th place in each case in the years 2003–2005, until 2006 with 4th place for the first time in the playoffs. This could not be repeated in 2007 despite a good start to the season and they reached 5th place, which was confirmed in the 2008 season. In 2009 the Hornets had to go into the play-downs, but could still leave the Gauting Indians behind. After the 2010 season , in which the team finished fifth in the regular season, the Hornets withdrew from the Bundesliga for financial reasons and will no longer participate in the 2011 season. In 2011 the Hornets play in the Regionalliga Süd-West, the third highest league in Germany. In 2014 they were promoted from the Regionalliga Süd-West and thus the Hornets will compete in the 2nd Bundesliga South in 2015.

From the 2005 season a second men's team could be reported, initially in the district league and after its dissolution in the regional league in different classes: Southwest (1996), West (1997-1998) and in the single-track regional league (1999-2001). 2001 succeeded with the championship in the regional league, promotion to the association league and then for the 2007 season promotion to the regional league.

From the 2005 season onwards, a third men's team could also be reported, which has since played in the regional league of the Southwest German Baseball and Softball Association and only narrowly failed in the championship in 2007. In the 2009 season the 3rd men's team plays in the new Association League West, which is still the lowest division.

Softball

In 1995, for the first time, a ladies' team was reported in the Association Softball League of the Southwest German Baseball and Softball Association, which was able to reach 3rd out of 6th place in Group A straight away. In its second season in 1996, the team was able to win the championship in the Verbandsliga West. From 1997 to 2001 the team played in the single-track association league and was able to win the championship three times in a row from 1999 to 2001. In 2002 they dared promotion to the 1st Bundesliga South, but had to relegate straight away. Since 2003 the team has been playing in the association league again and was able to win the championship of the southwest German baseball and softball association SWBSV there in 2007 and 2008.

In the 2009 season, a 2nd women's team in the regional league will also take part in the game for the first time in a syndicate with Lokomotive Bous . In addition, a hobby team will compete in the Rhein-Main-Liga in slowpitch softball.

Events

The Saarlouis Hornets organize several events every year, such as the baseball hobby tournaments, in which pub teams from the Saarlouis old town take part. Furthermore, the "Hornets" are often with stalls at Saarlouis city festivals such as the Easter market or the Emmes as well as the Saarbrücken leisure fair, where the inflatable batting cage is usually used.

In 2008 the Saarlouis Hornets organized the all-star game of the Southwest German Baseball and Softball Association in baseball and softball and organized their first slowpitch softball tournament, which the Kornwestheim Woodpeckers won . In addition, the national juniors' cup took place in Saarlouis on September 13 and 14, 2008 and was won by the North Rhine-Westphalia team .

International match Germany - Australia 2007

On 19 June 2007, the German baseball national team wore in preparation for the 2007 European Championship and World Cup 2007 as part of a three-part international game series an international match against Australia, represented by the Australian Provincial Team from. Germany won before 800 spectators 6: 3 after nine innings, with all three points of the Australians with two homers came about by the former player of the Saarlouis Hornets Michael Wells. Saarlouis Mayor Alfred Fuß threw the "first pitch".

Ball park

The club's own baseball field "In den Fliesen" is located on St. Nazairer Allee in Saarlouis. The course was opened in 1996 and is the only baseball field in Saarland to date.

In 2004, the expansion work started in 2002 was completed, with which the field could be brought to international standards by means of a field expansion and a fence system and the audience area was expanded. With the construction of a training and catering building in late summer 2006, the facility was expanded once more.

In 2007, further expansion measures were started: a covered batting cage was built, a second field was created for the softball team and a 220 m² clubhouse with sanitary facilities and training rooms was put into operation in 2008.
