Emmes

The Emmes , Immes , Ims or Imbs denote a snack, a feast or a funeral feast in various southern German, Lorraine and Alsatian dialects (from Middle High German "immesse" = snack). In the Saarland dialect, this means a festival with mostly a warm meal and a snack (usually afternoon coffee), in which the village community participates in some form or pays a visit. Examples are fair, wedding, (golden) communion, round birthday and funeral feast.

Folk festival in Saarlouis

The Emmes in Saarlouis is a folk festival that has been taking place since 1967 at the end of the "Saarlouis Week". During the entire week of the festival, various events take place such as district festivals, exhibitions, a children, youth and environment day as well as the day of relief services. At the latter, the police, volunteer fire brigade , THW , DLRG , Malteser Hilfsdienst , DRK , ADAC (with rescue helicopter) and all other emergency services and, since 2006, the Bundeswehr too. The Emmes lasts from Thursday to Saturday of the first week of June. During these three days there are many stages with live music and drinks stalls in the city center, on the “Great Market” and on Französische Straße. The highlight and conclusion of the Emmes is the musical fireworks on the last evening.
