Tri Repetae is a music album by the IDM duo Autechre . The album, released on November 6, 1995, is seen from today's perspective as a milestone in the genre.

background

publication

Like the group's previous albums, Tri Repetae was released on the English electronica label Warp Records . The title suggests that Tri Repetae is Autechres' third album. It was released on CD , double LP and double cassette . Catalog number of the album was WARP CD 038.

As usual with Autechre, an accompanying EP was released at the same time as the album , which originated from the same creative phase. This was called Anvil Vapre and contained four titles. The music video for the piece Second Bad Vilbel was made by director Chris Cunningham .

effect

The album ushered in a new phase in the overall work of the band. For the first time, Sean Booth and Rob Brown managed to break away from traditional structures and set trend-setting trends for the further development of electronic music . Most of the pieces consist of a largely abstract , broken rhythm. While these rhythms gradually change minimally and further rhythm elements are "layered" on top of each other, increasingly short melody fragments are recognizable. An industrial influence can be clearly heard, which is reflected in metallic-sounding noises.

In the overall work of the band, Tri Repetae marked a clear step away from the early, relatively simply structured and calm albums such as Incunabula and Amber towards complex works such as Confield , which fans of the group initially saw as a " cacophonic attack on established sound- and sense of rhythm ”( Thaddeus Herrmann ) were perceived.

design

The cover design for Tri Repetae comes from the English designer collective The Designers Republic with the support of Chris Cunningham and Gescom artist Russell Haswell.

The outer shell is kept completely in a simple gold tone and the name of the band and the album title are only visible on a small sticker. The sleeve contains several color photos of machine components and technical devices, but these have been heavily alienated and therefore cannot be described more precisely.

The liner notes of the CD edition contain the small print “incomplete without surface noise”. On the vinyl edition, however, the text “complete with surface noise” can be read.

Most of the critics recognized in Tri Repetae - not only for the development of the band itself - groundbreaking work. Sascha Kösch from the trendy magazine Frontpage awarded the high rating of six stars and judged:

“The 4 tracks start from relatively simple but very new grooves from which they always put on an even higher melody without destroying the base. Sometimes they dig into the groove and bring out their own dub worlds for its reason , sometimes they move easily over it and expand it like a cathedral. Autechre, as strange as it sounds, develop your very own sound out of nowhere and in a diversity that is very unusual "

- Sascha Koesch

The critics of the website almostcool gave 7.5 out of 10 possible points. The album is darker than the group's earlier works, but still interesting ("It's darker than the groups previous work, and a bit more harsh, but no less interesting."). Tri Repeate is an essential work of the IDM genre ("... fairly essential in terms of the IDM genre.") But also difficult to access and needs patience to get involved with the complex structures and pieces ("... it's not something that's very instantly accessible in terms of listening ... one may just find that the complex structures and tracks start to grow nearly every time you listen to it ... ")

The British magazine The Wire ranked Tri Repetae among the best albums of 1995 and voted it number 8 on the annual list.

The importance of the album for the further development of electronic music only emerged in retrospect. The German magazine Musikexpress included Tri Repetae in its selection of the best albums of the 1990s in March 2005. Tri Repetae took 49th place and is one of five purely electronic albums placed in this ranking.

Also AllMusic awarded the highest rating of five stars. Critic Ned Raggett judged:

"Tri Repetae stands for itself as a varied, perfect album, as clear evidence of Autechre's unique musical genius."

"Tri Repetae stands as a varied, accomplished album, clear evidence of Autechre's unique genius around sound."

- Ned Raggett

Pitchfork Media leads Tri Repetae all time at number 3 of the top 50 IDM albums.
