The Berlin Challengers (also SCC Berlin Challengers) are a Berlin baseball and softball club .

history

baseball

The club was founded in 1985 as one of the first baseball clubs in Berlin. Initially an independent club, the Challengers joined the major club SC Charlottenburg eV in 1993 , whose baseball department at that time consisted of the women's baseball team Berlin Destroyers. At this point in time, the Challengers had already made it to the 1st Bundesliga in 1988 . After dividing the single-track Bundesliga into a north and a south group in 1990, they were able to win the north group in the first two years. After several play-offs, sport stagnated in the mid-1990s, which resulted in a merger of the first division teams Berlin Challengers, Berlin Sluggers and Berlin Bats as well as the second division team Berlin Crusaders to form the Bundesliga team Berlin Phoenix in 1997 .

This team had little success at the national level. The only thing worth mentioning is reaching the European Cup final of the Cup winners (B-Pool) in 1997 in Strausberg , which was lost to the Swedish representatives Alby North Stars. After the sporting descent from the 1st Bundesliga in 1998, the merger teams parted ways again.

After the rebuilding, the Berlin Challengers were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga North in 2004, where they just failed to get promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in 2010 .

Softball

The Challengers founded the first women's softball team in Berlin, which initially played slowpitch softball against US military teams due to a lack of opponents . After a league operation in Fastpitch Softball in Berlin-Brandenburg was started, the Challengers took part in the finals for the German Softball Championship from 1993 to 1995, but without playing a role in the award of the title. After a restructuring phase, the Berlin Challengers were able to win the championship in Berlin-Brandenburg again in 2009 and, after defending their titles twice, were promoted to the softball Bundesliga in 2011 . However, the Challengers were relegated in 2012 and have been playing in the association league since then.
