Yuri Foreman (born August 5, 1980 in Homel , Belarusian SSR ) is an Israeli professional boxer of Belarusian origin and former world champion of the WBA in the light middleweight division.

Life

Foreman started boxing at the age of seven and moved to Israel with his Jewish family in 1991. He won 76 out of 81 amateur fights and became a three-time Israeli champion. In addition, he reached the second round of the Junior European Championships in 1997 in England, and the quarter-finals of the Junior World Championships in 1998 in Argentina. At the 1999 World Championships in the USA, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round against US champion Larry Mosley.

In 2000 he moved to New York City to promote his boxing career , where he trained at Gleason's Gym. Under coach Michael Kozlowski, he won the New York Golden Gloves in 2001 and a bronze medal at the National Golden Gloves in 2000 and 2001.

In 2002 he switched to the pros and remained undefeated in 29 fights. He beat 23 opponents with a positive match record, including Jesús Karass (11-2), Kevin Cagle (16-0), Troy Lowry (27-5) and Anthony Thompson (23-1). He won the North American Light Middleweight Championship ( NABF ) against Ukrainian Andrei Tsurkan (25-2) in December 2007 and defended it against Saul Roman (28-4) and James Moore (16-1).

In a subsequent title elimination match on June 27, 2009 in Atlantic City , there was a worthless match against Cornelius Bundrage (29-4). The reason was an unintentional collision with the heads of the athletes, with Foreman sustaining a cut injury. But he had been in the lead with all three judges until the cancellation in the third round. Then he was able to compete in Las Vegas on November 14, 2009 for the world title of the WBA in the light middleweight division, which he won by unanimous victory over Daniel Santos (32-3) and thus became Israel's first world boxing champion. However, he lost his first title defense on June 5, 2010 by a tKo defeat in the ninth round to Miguel Cotto (34-2). Then he had an operation on his knee. In March 2011 another premature loss to Paweł Wolak (28-1) followed.

After that, Foreman didn't get back into the ring until January 2013 and won four build-up fights by the end of the year. In 2014, he surprisingly announced his resignation after canceling his fight against Jorge Melendez planned for June. He trained as a rabbi after taking Kabbalistic courses and was ordained in 2014 . At the end of 2015 he started a comeback as a boxer; on December 5, 2015, he defeated Lenwood Dozier.

In January 2017 he lost to Erislandy Lara by knockout .

Yuri Foreman was born with the Hungarian amateur boxer Leyla. Leidecker married, they have two sons together.
