Anthony Tyrone Thompson (born August 17, 1981 in Philadelphia ) is a retired American boxer .
Career
Thompson won the 2000 US Championships in the light welterweight and the National Golden Gloves in the welterweight division . He then started at the national Olympic elimination in Florida, where he was defeated in the final against José Celaya. In 2001 he again won the US welterweight championships.
His greatest international success was winning the silver medal in the welterweight division at the World Championships in Belfast . He beat the Australian Daniel Geale in the preliminary round, the Ukrainian Viktor Poljakow in the second round, the Moldovan Vitalie Grușac in the quarter-finals and James Moore from Ireland in the semifinals before he was eliminated in the final against the Cuban Lorenzo Aragón .
In 2002 he switched to the professional camp and won 15 fights in a row, 12 of them prematurely. In 2004 he was surprisingly defeated by Grady Brewer , but then won again eight fights, including against World Cup challenger Robert Frazier. In June 2007 he lost narrowly to Yuri Foreman and in August 2008 prematurely to Ishmail Arvin. He won his last fight in May 2009 in the first round against Luis Lopez.
