Vanessa Louise Atkinson (born March 10, 1976 in Newcastle ) is a former English - Dutch squash player .

Life

Vanessa Atkinson was born in Newcastle, England. When she was a child, her family moved to the Netherlands, where she also started playing squash. Although she has an English passport, she has played exclusively for the Dutch association throughout her career. She lives in a relationship with the English squash player James Willstrop . In November 2013, the two parents had a son.

Career

Vanessa Atkinson was very successful in her career which she started in 1995. She won her biggest title in the 2004 season when she defeated Natalie Grinham in Malaysia 9-1, 9-1 and 9-5 in the final of the World Cup . In December 2005, she also took the lead in the world rankings for the first time, if only for one month. From April to July 2006 she briefly recaptured the top from Nicol David before losing it to the very same. She won numerous titles on the WSA Tour , including major tournaments such as the US Open , the Tournament of Champions and the Qatar Classic .

At European level, she became European Champion in 2005 with a 9: 7, 9: 7 and 9: 3 victory over Linda Elriani . Five years later she was also European champion with the Dutch national team . She won the Dutch national championship a total of twelve times .

She ended her career in March 2011.
