Vicki Cardwell , BEM (* 21st April 1955 in Adelaide as Vicki Hoffman ) is a former Australian squash player .
Career
Vicki Cardwell began her career in 1979. The left-hander became world champion in 1983 when she defeated Rhonda Thorne 9-1, 9-3 and 9-4 in Australia. Two years earlier, in 1981, she was left behind against Thorne in the world championship final. In Canada she had to admit defeat to her compatriot with 10: 8, 4: 9, 5: 9, 9: 7 and 7: 9. In the world rankings introduced in April 1983, she was right at the top, where she stayed for a total of twelve months. With the Australian national team , she took part in world championships in 1981, 1987 and 1989. In 1981 the team won the title against England, while in 1987 and 1989 they had to admit defeat to the English in the final.
At the British Open she reached the final five times. When she first participated in the final in 1978, she lost to her compatriot Sue Newman without winning a set of her own . From 1980 to 1983 she was again consistently in the finals and won all games. In 1980 she defeated Sue Cogswell and 1981 Margaret Zachariah in three sets each. In 1982 and 1983 she defeated Lisa Opie in four sets each.
In 1997 she ended her career. She was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1981 and was later inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the Squash Australia Hall of Fame . In 2013 she was elected as a director to the board of the Australian squash association Squash Australia .
Vicki Cardwell is married with two children. Son Josh is also a former squash professional , daughter Sarah Cardwell is still a professional.
