British Empire Medal

The British Empire Medal (English: Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service, British Empire Medal or BEM for short ) is a British medal of honor awarded for civil or military achievements that deserve the recognition of the crown. The medal will be awarded again in the United Kingdom from 2012 after an interruption since 1993. In the meantime it was reserved for a few members of the Commonwealth such as the Bahamas and the Cook Islands . The medal, which was first awarded in 1917, will be awarded from 2012 in recognition of service to the local community. The medal awarded by the Lord Lieutenant is expected to be received by approximately 300 people a year.
