Mohamed Nagy Ismail (also Mohamed Nagui , Arabic محمد ناجي, DMG Muḥammad Nāǧī ; * October 30, 1984 in Damanhur ) is an Egyptian football player , who mainly by his nickname Gedo (also: Gado ; pronunciation: Ge ddo ; Arabic جدو, DMG Ǧaddū , Egypt. for "grandfather") is known. He is usually used as a midfielder , but sometimes also as a striker . Gedo has been under contract with the Egyptian first division club Al-Ahly Cairo since 2011 . In 2009 he played for the Egyptian national team for the first time .

Career

Gedo has been playing for the small first division club Al-Ittihad since 2005 . In 2009 Gedo extended his contract, which should expire after the 2010 season, by one year. Before that, however, the important Egyptian first division team Zamalek had already found out about Gedo being vacated and started talks with him about a change. At the end of 2009 Zamalek demanded a signature from him according to Gedo's statements as proof that he wanted to come to the club, whereupon Gedo signed. It was initially unclear whether Gedo had already extended Ittihad at this point in time. The procedure was criticized after it became known in early February 2010 by Magdi Abdul-Ghani, the chairman of the players' committee of the Egyptian Football Association, even if Gedo's contract had expired at the end of the season. Regarding the ambiguity whether Gedo had signed with Zamalek first or renewed with Ittihad, the Ittihad chairman said later that there had been a delay in registering the contract extension due to problems between Ittihad and the Egyptian Football Association; but everything had been put in order (by the beginning of February 2010 at the latest).

After Gedo had scored four goals in twelve games in the 2009/10 soccer season, the previously unknown player was surprisingly brought into the Egyptian national soccer team at the end of 2009 for the 2010 African Cup . The Egyptian coach Hassan Shehata was heavily criticized for the decision. According to his own statements, there were no preliminary discussions with the 25-year-old about his list, which he only found out about from the Internet. In the last friendly game of the Egyptian team before the championship, which was played in Dubai against Mali , Gedo played his first international match on January 4, 2010. When he came on when he was 0-0, he scored the first goal for his country after ten minutes. At the African Cup of Nations he was only substituted in the second half and scored a total of five goals over the course of the tournament, against Nigeria , Mozambique , Cameroon , Algeria and the goal to make it 1-0 in the final against Ghana . For the third time in a row, Egypt was African champion and Gedo top scorer of the 2010 championship; Second place in the list of the tournament's top scorers was shared by four players, each with three goals, including Gedo's team captain Ahmed Hassan .

In early February 2010, Gedo admitted to having signed with Zamalek in late 2009, despite previous denials. But he also said that he would be obliged to join Ittihad for another year and a half, that he would not be able to change without the club's approval and that he would stay there beyond the current season anyway. Ittihad said it did not want to release Gedo until the end of the 2010/11 season.
