amateur

Among the amateurs, he won the gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2002 .

professional

He won his first 19 fights, most of them by knockout. On July 14, 2009 he competed against the Japanese Takahiro Aō for the world champion belt of the WBC and won by unanimous decision. In January 2010 he defended this title against Guty Espadas Jr. On August 25 of the same year he was named "Champion Emeritus" by the WBC. This gave him the opportunity to box directly for the world championship belt at any time.

At the end of April 2012, he faced Jhonny Gonzalez , who held this title, and lost by unanimous decision.
