Simone Niggli-Luder (born January 9, 1978 in Burgdorf ) is a former Swiss orienteer . She is considered the best orienteer of all time and won 23 world titles between 2001 and 2013. At the end of the 2013 season, Niggli-Luder resigned. She played her last international competition at the World Cup final in Baden on 5th / 6th. October 2013, where she won both races and also took the 9th overall World Cup title.
Life
Niggli-Luder comes from Burgdorf in the canton of Bern . She studied biology and in 2003 married Matthias Niggli , who is also an orienteer. Both live with their three children (* 2008; twins * 2011) in Münsingen .
Athletic career
With 23 gold, two silver and six bronze medals at world championships and ten gold, four silver and one bronze medal at European championships , she is the most successful female runner of all time in this sport. She caused a stir at the 2003 World Championships in Switzerland when she won gold in all disciplines (sprint, medium and long distance, relay). This feat was often regarded as unrepeatable and attributed to home advantage. At the World Championships in Japan in 2005, however, she repeated this success and again won gold in all disciplines. She won the overall World Cup in her discipline nine times . In 2003, 2005 and 2007 she was voted Swiss Sportswoman of the Year .

Simone Niggli-Luder is a member of the Swiss orienteering club Hindelbank and the Swedish club Ulricehamns OK . She is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right to Play and an ambassador for Biovision , the foundation for ecological development.
